Two is Only Terrible on the Third Thursday of Months Ending in R

May 20, 2007 by Kathryn

Magoo recently turned 2 and I honestly feel that there’s nothing terrible about him.

untitled2He loves blankets ferociously and sleeps with 6 or 8 tucked around him like a little nest. He still has fat in all the right squidging places but is stretching upwards so that he’s beginning to look like a Real Boy.

I have a hard time recognizing him without food on his face and I’m sure he finds me similarly unidentifiable without matching food on my shoulder. He loves hugs. It’s one of his many chants. “A hug, a hug, a hug, A HUG!!!!” The others include but are not limited to:

Mo mo cheece! (more more cheese — it doesn’t matter if his last cheese was 5 minutes or 5 weeks ago, he always begins the discussion as though he had just swallowed his latest bite.)
Wook, wook, wook, wook! (LOOK!)
My BAKE-IT! (blanket)
and
I got it!

Yeah, he’s got it.

He is often very concerned and has highly expressive eyebrows.

His head precedes his feet by at least a foot when he’s running. He is always running. Unless he’s falling down.

He wants to mosh with life. He wants to experience everything.

untitled3He loves his sister greatly. He may love airplanes more. He still prays for shoes several times a day. He begs to use the potty but never goes. He uses his head to catch his fall, afraid of damaging his hands.

Hands are for scooping peanut butter and for smearing… various things.

Each night at bedtime he makes an inventory of his various visible body parts and will not sleep until all of them have been solemnly kiss-ed.

Throughout the day, he peeks behind couches, boxes and piles of laundry, looking and asking for Daddy, sure he’ll pop up at any moment and mourning his absence.

He can eat more than Dan.

He feels things more deeply than me and cries when Laylee is sad.

He is a tender little man, growing up too quickly. I felt a sweetness about him before he was ever born but I never imagined how my soul would light up every time I saw his little round face and chubby knuckles.

I know that even when all the baby fat has melted away, I’ll always be able to look into his blue eyes and see my little buddy.

He is precious with a capital P, delightfully squidgy, and this is a very tender post.

The only thing I found terrible (and only sometimes) about age two were the moments when they really had something to tell me, and didn’t know how and I was trying to figure it out, and could not, and we would both get tantrummy over it. 🙂 Well, that , and they suddenly got BUSIER – falling, finding, running, giggling, climbing. How do they do that? Does cheese really give them that much energy? Maybe I need to eat mo mo! just to keep up!

Ah, Magoo you are a doll, an adorable, sweet, obviously macho, doll!

LOL at the protects his hands by falling on his head…I was expecting CPS to call every day when my boys were this age. I was sure someone was bound to report that our child had obviously sustained severe head trauma.

    How sweet! What a cutie!

If 2’s not bad, wait until he hits 5. That was my oldest’s nightmare age!

My husband sometimes teases me for the way my son has me wrapped around his finger. I love my three daughters fiercely, but there’s just something about a little *man*! I think it’s because – for me – it’s amazing to me that this little guy is mine, and yet is so OUTSIDE of me. I know what it’s like to be a little girl – been there, done that. But to watch this little boy, fruit of my loins, and yet such an alien, it can be enthralling. Yeah for us that son #2 is due in September! 🙂

“He wants to mosh with life”

That is just the absolute best descriptive sentence I’ve read in a long time. Love, love, love that.

I’m telling you, little boys are awesome and they always love their mamas. He is absolutely precious and this post is pure sweetness.

Awww Magoo! I never thought 2 was so awful either, it was the next couple years when they thought because they could talk pretty well now that that meant they got whatever they wanted, lol.

“He uses his head to catch his fall, afraid of damaging his hands.”

Too funny! I was always convinced we were on the short list of CPS at this age. Surely someone was going to report the obvious head trauma our boys had been inflicted with…self inflicted let me state clearly!

    um…eeew?

He is a lovely child and I am so tickled by your descriptions of him. I’ve never been a pincher person but oh, how I want to squeeze those peanut butter cheeks!

Take more pictures Kathryn. I’ve found that you spend less time making keepsakes on the second kids. Guilty as charged.

And he really is adorable… and you’ll love him more than you thought possible at every age. This was a beautiful post, DYM. It makes me want to run and grab the kids and just hold them till they sleep tonight.

I do think his chubbiness is pretty adorable! I always pray for a chubby baby, but I mostly get skinny little things! They are still adorable, but I love me some chunk!

Your kids will love having such wonderful tributes to them when they are grown. I hope you are saving copies of posts like these. You should print them out and keep them in a notebook for each of your kids. Posts like that will beat out boring baby book statistics any day.

I have that sudden lunatic-ish desire to wake my children and kiss them till they squirm and scream. That was beyond sweet, Kathryn.

I thought I’d let you know that my 14yo ds ate a pickled pigs foot. I didn’t take a picture, but I can if you want one, lol. He’d apparently eat anything. He got $5 for eating a big beetle the other day.

Magoo is so cute! It’s good to know that not all 2’s are that bad… something to look forward to, maybe?! Ah, a girl can dream!

What a sweet post! I have a two year old also and he is the epitomy of sweetness as well…..when he’s not the epitomy of terror that is…..it depends on the time of day. I also wanted to thank you for those reading recommendations in the next post, as I am searching for books that are mind capturing as well. I wanted to know if you have read The Chronicles of Narnia? I love those books but I think everyone and their dog has read them so I guess I have nothing new to recommend….Also I designed a new site and I hope it loads easier for you. If not please let me know as I hate slow loading sites too! Anyways, loved stopping by!
