The Urine is Here!

June 23, 2008 by Kathryn

The sanity is not.

We’re doing it. We’re saying goodbye to diapers and hello to stench and stains and public restrooms and plastic bags in my purse waiting to be filled with little peed-in Lightning McQueen special pants.

Magoo’s been ready but lazy for a while.

I’ve been not ready AND lazy for a while.

But I’ve decided it’s time. The weather is perfect for airing little baby man parts and whizzing on the grass. My back is just well enough to allow me to laze around asking Magoo if he’s wet or dry hundreds of times a day but not well enough to be running all over the world.

The fear of little yellow liquid surprises will keep me close to home which will be good for my back. I’m at that dangerous stage of recovery where I feel “okay” so I want to plow through everything that’s piled up while I was taking it easy. But I know my body’s not ready to go full force yet.

Full-time potty training Magoo could be just the road block I need to keep my feet planted safely at home. I should leave the house every once in a while though so I’ll have the experience of smelling the air outside our giant litter-box of a home and when I come back here I’ll know how bad it is and take steps to regulate it.

**Update — The first day of Potty Boot Camp is over and he’s had one accident and managed to spontaneously run to the potty 5 times listening only to the inner voice of his clueless little bladder. He’s doing really well! My main concern now is the uncushioned nature of his tender little nuggets in those big boy pants. I fear that he slams around this house with far too little concern for his future children.**

I am going to be right there with you in a week or so only I am doing both my boys at once. I think I am insane.

You should put a disclaimer on your blog: Do not read if you’ve recently had abdominal surgery. Because laughing that hard with still-healing incisions HURTS! Laughed till I cried, I did.

My 2.5 year old is potty trained through the night. It is awesome. Really really awesome. We are totally diaper free in squirrelly ville. He did wake up from nap and pee on the floor halfway tot the bathroom, but hey the dog already pees on garbage day so no biggie! I love Nature’s Miracle btw. Made for dog pee but works on anything organic.

Feel better soon and take it easy!

    Sounds like a good plan!

My daughter (3) trained herself at the age of 2 and has since regressed big time. She all but refuses to go to the bathroom (too busy). We’ve been having tons of accidents for months.

I too have a 2 year old boy and he was doing great and no more pull ups no bed wetting. But now at 21/2 he is not making it to the bathroom. And bed wetting. Should I go back to the pull up’s. Do you make a big deal about it or just tell him we need to try to go to the bathroom in the toilet??

      Tired of washing sheets!

Oh, for goodness sake, put him back in pull-ups at night. I’ve read that it’s a physiological thing and that when they’re ready they’ll do it. For most kids, they WANT to get to the potty in time but they just can’t make it. He won’t wear them forever. There’s no harm in doing it and 2 1/2 is young, especially for a boy to stay dry at night. Whatever you do, don’t make a big deal about it. You’ll give him a complex. Seriously. Save your relationship with your son and his self esteem and just tell him he can wear underwear to bed again when his body’s ready to stay dry.

I’m thinking of heading there some day in the near future. I’d like the freedom from diapers, but really don’t know if I’ll be ready until the boy is 17.

We just did the potty training thing — while on vacation. I think I spent more time in the bathroom than the beach. Just wait until he realizes that he can make you stop whatever you’re doing when you ARE out and about to take him potty — and a little tyrant is born (or tyrant-ess in my case).

Hope is right there with Magoo. We are starting today too. But after we go to the park this morning. I would hate to turn public slides into wet and wild.
    Good luck!

I was so overwhelmed to potty train my son. I didn’t know where to start. The first couple times I tried to train him, he pee-peed everywhere but in the toilet. I finally read Potty Training in One Day. It’s not really in one day because you have to complete the prerequisites before the potty party day, but after the potty party day he was trained.

I checked out 30 books from the library about going pee and poo and I think that was what had the greatest impact. It was like he needed an instruction manual.

I shouldn’t tell you that my five boys were all stubborn about potty training until they were afraid they wouldn’t be allowed to go to Kindergarten…

I wonder if they make little mini sized athletic cups for little boys who are used to having the extra padding of a diaper…

Well…let me try to put this delicately…..his “nuggets” have not descended yet into the “danger zone”…they won’t until puberty….and so the risk of not having grandchildren is greatly reduced. Now a severe kick would definitely hurt him…but right now, they are not developed enough to worry about. I have 2 boys and I know what I’m talking about. 🙂

    Yay for big boy pants!

Don’t worry about the nuggets (you are hilarious) it seems like they treat those things with much disregard and in painful ways, but you know, it probably isn’t harmful or painful, apparently.

Boys have bigger bladders, and thus can hold it for much longer…reason #379 of Why I Love having Boys. 🙂

I’m unfortunately in the heffalump camp. 2 of my 3 boys were terribly stubborn and we worried about the kindergarten “entrance requirements”. the 3rd is 2.5 and I just can’t gear myself up for the fight yet. We did the potty day party and everything else, to no avail. The trick is to find that one magic thing that they care enough about to disrupt whatever it is they’re doing and go take care of business. Oh, and while diapers are a mess unto themselves, the seemingly eternal mess of boys who can’t/won’t aim (or worse just want to see where ELSE they can pee) seems far worse to me than more diapers. And I beg to differ with mother of the wild boys. My boys have thimble bladders. All the men I know have thimble bladders. And my daughter and me and all my sisters can hold it for eons, to the point of danger of bladder infections. She just may have the only camel-breed boys on the planet. Magoo will be his own man with all his own joys for you to experience and I wish you the BEST of luck! May the force be with you.

    Oh help me!

I have a two year old, and I am contemplating potty training. Then I would only have one in diapers, which would be HEAVEN!

Are you just leaving him in briefs with no shorts all day, or are you just letting him run around sans underpants and bottoms? Are you giving him any bribes for going to the potty or just praise, etc?

I’m thinking in July I will start working on this. I’m sure it will be an adventure!

Wow, I will look forward to the day my two month old baby girl will be ready to be potty trained also. That will save you a lot from the high cost of diapers! Just last night, me and DH were talking about the high cost of diapers we were spending every week.
Anyway, your blog entry reminds me how this little darling would always pee everytime I change her diaper. The first time she did it and I looked at her, oh my she was smiling at me as if having fun! She never has done this if DH is the one changing the nappy- I wonder why? Am I being tricked by this little naughty angel? huhu…

I’d rather put my eye out with a fork than have to go through potty training again.

Which is probably JUST the kind of encouragement you were looking for.

Chin up, friend. You can do it.

Looking forward to more updates. The Biscuit just saw himself pee for the first time in the bath yesterday. He was fascinated, which I assure myself is a good sign. I also constantly assure myself that all those mothers who wish their kids would stay babies longer are very jealous of my developmentally delayed little boy so I just need to take the diapers in stride. Some day he will be ready and he’ll let us know. Until then I say a little prayer every morning that I don’t have to wash his bedding before I make breakfast. Those nighttime pull-ups are not working for my little milk drinker! Oh, for a boy who would wake up and ask to go to the potty.

Oh, are you doing a separate potty chair or the kind that sits right on the toilet? Just looking for info before we buy.

I JUST blogged about Skyler being diaper-free for a few days. It took me a year. I was not ready AND lazy. She finally decided to just go ahead without me seeing that sometimes, I wasn’t even changing the pull-ups. Yes, I am competing with you to be more gross.

    Good luck, lady.

    Oldskool Grandpa potty-pissing tip:
Tell him to aim for the Cheerios.
Toss a few in the toilet and he will feel like a water pistol-armed kid at the carnival trying to shoot down the ducks. Keep a few stuffed gorillas on hand incase he wins.
