Neighborhood Building by Four-Year-Olds

July 10, 2007 by Kathryn

“Why are all the houses in a line? The houses should be in a circle. It would be much more funner that way. We’re just not strong enough to skootch them.”

Isn’t it fun when we get to see the glimmerings of genius in our children?

What great “outta the box” thinking! It sure is more fun to ride your bike on the coul de sac sidewalks!!!

indeed. it would be more fun. I sense the tide of poor urban planning in your neck-o-the-woods might turn when your children grow older!

Since we live in the boonies, neighborhoods are a foreign concept to my kids. When we went to visit my folks who live in a subdivision, BabyGirl asked, “Why do all the houses in Tennessee look the same?”

So THAT’s the proper spelling of “skootch”!

    Brilliant idea.

I so agree. Let’s skootch them all into a circle.

While we are at it, why not build skywalks and attach each house to it’s neighbor, then we can go from house to house and never touch the ground??

I’m thinking of a geometric housing concept… brilliant, if I were smart, I’d have a runaway train. Unfortunatley, I’ll just have to savor the brilliance of the little people who really know how to use their heads :-)… hey wait! That’s not unfortunate! We are the moms, we are the lucky ones! As always, I enjoyed your post! Thx!

Genius. Kids say it like it is. I love it. P.S. I stumbled across your blog months ago and I have been listening to your thoughts. You don’t mind, do ya? God bless!

OK what does ‘skootch’ mean? And tell the 4 year old town planner to go and live in the UK. There are Crescents and Closes, Greens and Circuits and my Grandma even lived at 77 The Oval and guess what, it WAS an oval! With all the houses round the outside of it. It was hideous. Sorry 😀

I think Laylee would have been a great success as a pioneer wagon train master. I can just hear her now, “All right everyone, let’s circle those wagons. It’s not that we are worried about wild animals or Indians or anything. It would just be so much funner that way. And we are all about the fun!”
