My Fear of Holes

February 28, 2007 by Kathryn

I don’t really trust the holes in my washer.

I refuse to put the soap in until the bottom holes fill with water.

Who wants to throw all that detergent into a pock-marked abyss?

Not me.

And so I wait.

no kidding!! And I always thought the dishwasher water would all spill out onto the floor if you opened it while filling up. But I didn’t really have to share that info. I just didn’t want to leave you hanging there with crazy thoughts about appliances all alone.

I do the same thing. Do you think it has something to do with the home we were raised in? That is the only reason I can think of that we both do it. I wonder if mom does.

Oh, I am so glad to hear I’m not the only one who has to stand and wait for the water to get above the little holes…and I thought I was just being paranoid! πŸ™‚

That never even occurred to me. Until now. Thanks for that–I really NEEDED another neurosis.

We have a handy little hole where you put the detergent and it doesn’t go into the wash until the entire this is filled up and already swishing. No waiting for me, hee hee.

If the soap went through the holes into the abyss….wouldn’t the water too? But it doesn’t, it stays in there, so the soap must not go too far either.

Oh, I’m a DOM (Daring Old Mom). I start the wash and pour the detergent. AND get this. I just start loading in the clothes right away. I’m WILD I tell you. It’s the daring thing in life that gets me going…

Who does laundry? πŸ™‚ I have wondered the same thing. And so, like you, I wait.

    And it feels good.

I *think* you are supposed to put the soap in as the water fills up and then when the tub is full you are supposed to add the clothes. At least that is what they taught the beehives a year or so ago.

I think your doing good if the clothes just get washed!!

I put the clothes in first so that I can pretend I’m not as neurotic as gals like you. =P Hee hee…you funny. Thanks for the giggle.

Great topic! lol I’m old school too I guess. I put the clothes in and then the soap and turn it on. I’m too impatient to wait!

I wait until the water has filled the bottom of the washer, then add the soap… and wait until the soap is all dissolved before adding the clothes. I heard that putting laundry soap on clothes can stain them. Is that even true? Because I yell (nicely) at my husband when he gets soap on the clothes. That would be bad if I yelled at him for no reason.

I am not believing you actually wrote about that. I do the same thing. It is so weird to “hear” someone else say it, though. That is so funny!!!

Hmm…am I the only one who puts clothes in first, then sprinkle on the soap, then close the washer and start it? Have I been doing it wrong all these years? πŸ™‚

The only time I didn’t do what you do was with my step-mom’s washer. She had a little tray that you put on top of the agitator after the clothes were in, then you sprinkled the soap into the tray.

To be honest, I switched to liquid laundry detergent so that no one would question why I dissolved the soap in water first, then added the clothes.

Now I have a front loader and a drawer so I can throw everything in willy nilly if I like, but I don’t. Clothes in, lock door. Start water, pour soap. Open drawer that has already had water running through it, add soap, close drawer. Run away for an hour.

Is this going to devolve into the dryer sheet controversy? I think I ran across that at Kerflop. About how using dryer sheets shortens the life of your dryer? Did I just give someone a whole new neurosis? πŸ™‚

I don’t have that problem, but I won’t step on manhole covers. I don’t trust that they are secure there. I just know I’ll step on one and fall in and die one day. And I won’t put my hand in any hole I can’t see in. Not EVER going to happen.

Why does this NOT surprise me?
But then again… I’m the type of person who starts the washer, throws in the detergent, immediatly follows with chucking in the clothes, and then I shut the top and leave. I just want to get it all over with, ya know?
    This drives my hb batty.

Thanks a lot. Like I NEEDED something else to worry about. Next you’re going to tell me that it’s not the washing machine and / or dryer that swallow my socksw (but only ONE from each pair), but that’s it’s really MY fault and _I_ need to be more careful in sorting, folding, putting away, etc.

I don’t need this, DYM. I SO don’t need this.

ROTFL!! Yes, I’m one of those who puts the soap in, starts the water, adds clothes and stands there staring, hypnotised by the swishing of the washer. Something about it is just IT for me…

I found this blog after searching for fear of holes. This cracked me up. I’m not afraid of the holes in my washer, but I have this fear of weird textured holey things, like acoustic ceiling tiles. Well, I”m not really afraid, they just really creep me out!
