McSquidgems’ Self-Infatuation

October 27, 2009 by Kathryn

Some might call it narcissism but I like to think of it as a healthy dose of self esteem. Our baby is in love with herself. Here she is at her one-month checkup. She screamed in the lobby and again after the appointment but the entire time she was near that mirror, she was absolutely enthralled with her own reflection. She already knows how cute she is. She is her own best friend.

Wanda cries more than my other babies did. She seems to have a sore tummy a lot and she squinches up her little face, pulls in her legs and cries. We’ve tried the Mylicon drops and this weekend I took her to a craniosacral therapist who worked on her and taught me some digestive massage techniques I can use at home.

She just has trouble pooping and digesting without pain. Her pediatrician looked at the great fatness she’s become and said he’s not worried about the fussiness since she’s thriving so well. That’s code for, “Dude. Look how fat she is. If she were really sick, would she be this squidgeable?” Indeed. Dan has nicknamed her McSquidgems and although I say she cries frequently, it’s not entirely true. She cries frequently if she’s not being held at all times and so we pretty much hold her unless she’s sleeping and sometimes even then.

We’re not sure if we’ll have any more kids and I’ve decided that there are far worse things I could do with the next year of my life than spend it holding this little person. She seems to agree. I think she’d hold herself if she could but I’m the next best thing.

She is so precious! She may mature past the point of needing to be held at some point, too, you never know. 🙂 Do you ever do any babywearing? It can really help free up your hands when baby is fussy!!! Glad you seem to be doing well!

She is absolutely beautiful! All that squidginess makes me want to bury my face in a fat baby neck…..OK, No, four is enough. I cannot have another baby simply to lose myself in rolls of cute baby fat.

Ooh, definitely hold her while you can…she’ll be all grown up and loose the cute knuckle-dimples all too soon. 🙂

so cute. Hold her all you can.
My carrier was a life saver. Frees the hands up to do things. The baby is being held and will even fall asleep. Loved it! Some days I wish I could still plop the little guy in there and keep him contained.

That is one darling, adorable little person. I hope her love affair with herself lasts forever. Have fun holding her. I wish I could help with that little task.

She is so cute. did you discuss acid reflux at all with your Dr.? My baby girl wanted to be held upright ALL the time and was clearly uncomfortable pooping and digesting. She would scream everytime I tried to put her down, even at an angle. It ended up being acid reflux and she is on Zantac (which I hate doing but it works). I am also off of dairy and was off of soy but that seems to be ok now. Most books have a run down of the symptoms to watch for with acid reflux and most of them say that the baby will spit up a lot but that is not always true. Just a thought.

Total agreement with all the other commenters on the cute factor. So have you put mirrors up all over your house??

My 2nd one went through the had-to-be-held-constantly phase until 3 1/2 months, although he didn’t have the digestive issues you describe. We have pictures of EVERYONE who visited during that time holding him in the sling (and often standing in the laundry room while the dryer was going), because sometimes I had to take a shower or use the bathroom, believe it or not. It was exhausting then, but now that he’s 4 it doesn’t seem so bad! 😉

She obviously has reason to be besotted with herself…what a gorgeous baby girl she is!

I do love her sidebar pic – all that chub, and the look on her face, as if to say, “Uh, Mom??? You DO realize that I look fat in this picture? I will SO pay you back for this in 12 years…” 😀

You grow them “purty”, as my grandpa would have said…makes me wish it was March and we had our own #3…sigh…

    What a gorgeous babe!

My friend’s baby cried all the time, and she received a suggestion to try taking him to the chiropractor as often when a baby goes through birth their spine can become a bit disaligned. After one adjustment he was a new baby, no lie. Another friend says every time she takes her little girl to the chiropractor she has the best night sleep ever.

Just a thought for you to consider!

    Congratulations on the beautiful girl!
