Real Men Watch Victorian Romance Movies

August 15, 2007 by Kathryn

And they LIKE them!

Wives and Daughters finally came up in my Netflix queue last week and the first disc in the BBC miniseries arrived by mail much to my girlish glee and delight.

Dan got home from work when I was about halfway through the first disc and after a brief rundown of the major characters and their likeliness to make advantageous matches with each other, he was hooked. WHAT would happen to Miss Molly? What, indeed!

The disc ended at the most cliffhangerish of cliffhangers and we were left wondering whether a girl of nearly twenty would be doomed to remain a spinster, or more importantly, whether the 10 pounds her father provided for ribbons and gowns would be enough to make her quite suitable for the many balls she would attend in the meantime.

I sent the disc back and waited anxiously for the conclusion to arrive in my mailbox. Yesterday it DID! I asked Dan semi-sarcastically if he’d like me to wait so he could watch it with me. He said he really wanted to see what happened and we cuddled up to view the enchanting finale.

As the movie started, Stephanie’s husband who’s staying with us this week got home from work and asked what we were watching. When we told him he said, “Those shows can really hook you in, where you just have to know what happens next.” He decided to keep his distance.

10 minutes later I heard him sigh from the kitchen where he had been eavesdropping, “Oh FINE!” He headed over to the couch, dinner plate in hand, and plunked himself down next to Dan.

They commentated throughout the movie with me and hazarded guesses about what would happen next. They referred to the characters by their names and asked questions like, “Why does he get called ”˜Mr. Osbourne’ when they just call his brother ”˜Roger’?” and, “Wouldn’t that be hard to do in a corset?” They clapped their hands and laughed out loud at the funny parts and they cringed at the DRAMA OF IT ALL.

Dan held me like a baby during the moments of repressed passion and romance, the parts that left me clasping my hands to my tender bosom, whilst tears welled up in my eyes.

It was the best movie-watching experience of my married life. And when it was over and our house guest was safely out of earshot, I turned to Dan and said, “Oh, Mr. Roger. Would you take me upstairs?”

“Nothing could please me more,” he exclaimed and my heart grew three sizes.

I am going directly to Netflix right now to add that to my queue. Right after Sense & Sensibility, the Love Comes Softly series, and Nanny McPhee. Hubs is going to be SO EXCITED.

I’m afraid my husband would never let down his “manliest of the manly” fronts for any chick flick. Although I did get him to watch the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice and he said, “It’s good.” That’s as close as he’s come.

Neil loves Pride and Prejudice. Will watch it over and over and over. Definitely going to have to seek out that mini-series. Sounds fab!

How fabulous! My hubby likes to watch Drake & Josh, but that isn’t nearly as romantic. I think he’d eat glass before he’d watch Pride & prejudice, so I’m pretty sure Wives & Daughters is out of the question…I, on the other hand, HAVE to see it now!

I have totally converted my husband to these BBC costume dramas. Another good one is North and South by the same author as Wives and Daughters.

Reading that was almost as good as watching the BBC version of Jane Eyre. Which you MUST watch if you have not. OMW. Still gives me goosebumps.

Ha, I have added it to my cue. Let’s just say, my husband refers to Colin Firth as “the sexy beast.”
Oh, and if you haven’t seen it, Miss Potter is also delightful and has some lovely repressed passion as well.

OK, so the houseguest has to be out of earshot but it’s ok to share it with the internets? You crack me up!

I think Wives and Daughters is in my queue! We just sent back “Persuasion” and “Nicholas Nickleby”. Have you seen “Miss Potter”? We both really liked that one. I love movies like “Emma”, “Sense and Sensibilities” and “Pride and Prejudice”. Next in my queue is “The Importance of Being Earnest” (Not to be confused with Ernest Saves Christmas) and “Jane Eyre” YEAH!

Hear! Hear! Mr. Right will often be the one to suggest such movies! It’s just one of the many reasons that he has my heart.

And thanks for the recommendation. I could do with a new one…

That is the funniest and coolest thing I have seen in a long time. Those movies are my all time favorites and I actually did my Senior thesis on 19th century women’s literature at B.Y.U. and love them………alas, my husband can not be bothered with them. Occasionally if a newish Jane Austen type movie is out he could maybe go, but few and far between. You post made me smile ear to ear. Thank you for letting me live vicariously thru you. Your Dan is a Champ!!! – stacy

Just so long as Dan only likes to watch those movies with you. It’s sad to say, but these days if a man likes to watch BBC dramas on his own he’s considered a loner and a little weird. But if he likes to watch them with his wife, he’s considered charming and sensitive.

That is soooo great. My husband has a little too much machismo goin’ on for that stuff so far, but I’m still hoping for a moment like that.

I will have to remember that one. My husband is more than willing to watch these kinds of movies with me. After we watched Persuasion, he said, gee she knows how to tear your heart out doesn’t she!

Why I do believe Mrs. Daring that you have captured The Essence of what does make for such fine viewing on this New Invention called The Television. Whilst you’ve enchanted your Dear Husband, I find it quite amusing that you would think to share these innermost Emotions with us all. Yours Very Sincerely, Mrs. GiftofGreen 😉

Love it! My husband loves chick flicks – my favorite chick flick at the moment is “The Holiday” with the amazing Kate Winslet. And yesterday he watched “Raising Helen” with me. Although occasionally I have to watch “300” or “Terminator”
