A Really Keen Giveaway

November 23, 2008 by Kathryn

**A winner has been chosen**

I’ve come to realize that there are 3 kinds of people in this world, those who wear and love Keens, those who covet Keens in a way that Moses would greatly disapprove of, and those who’ve never heard of them.

So for those of you in category 3, here’s a rundown of why I love Keen to encourage you to join categories 1 or 2. If you still need convincing after reading this, visit their new website and I’m sure you’ll be hooked.

1. They’re environmentally and socially responsible. Much of their products are made from reused or recycled material. They use environmentally friendly manufacturing processes, give back to the community, and are working through a Fair Labor certification process. There are so many companies who have jumped on this bandwagon half-heartedly but I get the impression that Keen really means to make a difference in the industry and the world. Their company was founded on these principles 5 years ago and they keep taking their commitment to the next level.
2. They’re based in the Northwest so we’re neighbors and likely soon to be BFFs.
3. Their design is smart and their shoes are well-made, rugged and durable.
4. Handbags. You just have to look. Trust me.
5. Everything they make is gorgeous.
Wear Around MJ
Now you’re asking yourself, “Why is Kathryn giving me a big fat advertisement for Keen?” Firstly because I like em so darn much and secondly because they want to give one of you a Christmas present. An awesome Christmas present, a present of which I am totally jealous in a hypocritical I-enabled-this-so-why-am-I-freaking-out-with-envy sort of way.

Betty BootHead over to the site and look through everything. May I suggest the Ridgelines, Betty Boots, Palermo Boots or Palermo MJs?

How about a pair of classic Newports or Wear Around MJs?

bag_bettyAnd let’s face it. If it were me, I’d spend a good long time checking out their laptop bags and handbags. I’ve particularly got my eye on the Oswego and the Betty bag. The day packs are also delicious but I’d feel like I’d end up sharing them with my family and honestly, who wants that?

So yes. Go to the site. Pick out something you can’t live without and come back here and tell me what it is in the comments section of this post. Next Sunday night I will choose one random winner to rule them all who will receive a coupon code good for one free item of your choice from the Keen website. That’s right ladies and you 3 gentlemen. The winner gets to pick any one thing you want. Squeee! I’m so excited.

Here’s the bonus. If you post about the contest on your own site with a link back to this page, then come back here leaving a second comment with a link to your post, you’ll be entered twice.

But wait. There’s more. When the contest ends, I have a coupon code for everyone else to get free shipping on anything you order from the site.

So everyone wins. And the peasants rejoice. Now go. Window shop. Come back and report your findings.

We Go Together – Couples’ Halloween Costume Ideas

October 26, 2008 by Kathryn

Dan and I got all decked out for a costume party this weekend. Low-tech, low-budget, low-wow-factor, but also low-stress.

The party was held at Nacho and Encarnación’s house. The two of them went all out. Dan and I like to stick with t-shirts.

When I was pregnant with Laylee, before I had a digital camera, I wore a black turtle neck with a white circle and an 8 on the stomach and Dan wore a green shirt with 6 pockets.

What are your favorite couples’ costume ideas?

Off We Go

August 1, 2008 by Kathryn

As I head off this weekend with Eve, Fawn and friends, I leave you with a post that is not at all about vampires or dead bodies in a lake. It’s up over at Parenting.com.

This trip will likely be the closest I ever get to attending a Star Trek convention and I’m fascinated to be around real live obsessed fans. I enjoyed the books but I have a feeling that by going to Forks for the release of Breaking Dawn, I will be entering an untold realm of literary obsession that I may not be fully prepared for. I should have much to report on when I get back.

Summer is Upon Us

July 24, 2008 by Kathryn

And the blogging is slim. There’s just so much going on around here. Who can find the time to record it? Therefore I will offer you a photographic essay to explain my absence from the sphere of blogism.

The kids have started swimming lessons and they’re in a class together, although we’ve had to skip twice this week due to the near-death plague ravaging their bodies. This is probably for the best since at the last lesson Magoo’s face nearly exploded and it’s such a cute face, I’d like to keep it intact.
penney14
We’ve been cavorting with pirates.
penney12
Running all around.
penney11
Eating more than we should.
penney8
Bonding as a family.
penney9
And going on late night walks around our neighborhood in the perfect Puget Sound summer weather.
penney15
I’ll totally have more time for blogging when the school year starts and I’m teaching the youth at church, serving as the co-communications board member for the PTA, teaching at Magoo’s co-op preschool, running SeattleMomBlogs.com, and working on my other writing projects.

Her back is “out”

June 15, 2008 by Dan

Kathryn’s back is “out”. Not “out” as in “un-cool”; “out” as in “out of commission”. (I find her back very cool.) So she asked I post a little something to let you all know that she has not, in fact, passed away, but is merely immobilized for the time being.

Because staying on her back is crucial to her recovery, today was a unique Father’s day–I got to really be a dad, full-bore, the whole day. It was tiring, but I love my family and it was great to be able to run the whole show for them.

Do you like my party hat?

Thank you so much to those who have been aware of Kathryn’s sidelined state and have been so kind. Your encouraging words and especially your helpful hands (thanks for the dinners!) have really cheered us and helped us along.

One such friend, whom I will call Brandy, went so far as to take Laylee shopping to get a Father’s Day present for me. Laylee had decided (on her own) that I needed new “work shoes”. Not your everyday Father’s Day gift idea, for sure. I guess my current pair are starting to deteriorate a bit. So Kathryn sent her to get me a new pair like my old ones:

Old shoes.

Instead, here is what she came home with:

New shoes.

Apparently, the trip to pick them out was quite fun, too; Brandy sent us an email afterwards to detail their exploits together, from which I quote:

“Laylee was so adorable today =) She made Roberto and I laugh the entire time! I’m going to try and remember the funny things she said and share them with you.

But first you should know that Laylee picked out the shoes for Dan all by herself-—she didn’t want to get him tennis shoes-—she wanted to get him ”˜work’ shoes. She was so cute-—very particular about which shoes he’d like. So, yeah — I hope you like them, or rather Dan likes them!

Laylee was very proud of herself. I pointed out many Skechers and Laylee would say ”˜those actually look like Bobsled shoes’ if the soles had bumps on them—-which most of the Skechers had. She said that about 3 pairs of Skechers. It was hilarious—-like when have you ever been shopping for Bobsled shoes before and how does she know what those would look like?!

She liked the fact that the shoes she chose would look good with “jeans… and even sweats”—-she’s so funny. I tried to steer her towards running shoes like you described or other Skechers that you had to tie up and had some design on them-—like two-toned or stripes, but she was set on black as he already had a brown pair of shoes. I had Laylee try on the shoes for comfort testing—-it was cute—-she tried on one pair and said they had ”˜bumps’ on the sides, so they wouldn’t work. She really thought the ones we ended up getting were comfy!

Laylee told us she made a Father’s Day card and said ”˜I wrote a Father’s Day card and put “To Dad” and other Father’s Day stuff’ =) It was funnier the way she said it because it sounded like ”˜To Dad’ was a Father’s Day saying or something.

Laylee said ”˜I am a good example in my family because I always have to remind my mom and dad to not say bad words’. Which after we laughed, I told Roberto it is probably words like ”˜hate (I hate peas) or stupid’ etc. But it sounds so funny coming from a child — as though you used swear words 😉 <ed.: We used to sometimes, in extreme situations, say “gosh”. I guess we still do, since Laylee has to remind us not too. 🙂 >

I told Laylee she could pick out Dan’s favorite candy bar — so we were looking at all the choices and she picks the Hershey Bar and says ”˜I’ve seen him eat one of these before, so it must be his favorite’. Ahhhhh, too funny.

Laylee told us she was going to keep Dan’s present a secret, so it’s like ”˜keeping the beans’ instead of ‘spilling the beans’–too clever! =)

We bought Laylee bubble gum and she said as she chewed some ”˜it makes me smile because it is so delicious.’ She then stated ”˜when people are sad, they should eat food because then it would make them smile and be happy’—-she has no idea that it’s called emotional eating-—LoL.

So, it was entertaining and enjoyable to spend time with Laylee-—she’s great Kathryn!”

Thanks for “keeping the beans”, Laylee. It was a great Father’s Day surprise. 🙂

Dad and Laylee, Father's Day 2008

P.S. I wore the shoes to church today, and they were comfy and looked great.

My Favorite Husband — Mother’s Day Edition

May 11, 2008 by Kathryn

And the award for My Favorite Husband Mother’s Day 2008 goes to… SLASH THOMPSON!!!!
We ROCK and stuff
This is a picture of us dressed up to play Rock Band this weekend with some crazy friends. Dan went all out with the nose ring and wig this time. He even painted on a gold tooth. No one can ever say that man’s not fly because he is.

Not only is he fly but he’s also the recipient of the MFHMD2008 award and I will tell you why. This year for Mother’s Day Dan asked me for a few gift ideas. I typed out a wish list, complete with links to websites, and then gave it to him way too late for him to order anything on the list in time for Mother’s Day. So he improvised.

I’m trying to consume less after following one of my reader’s advice to watch this video. When I do need something, I’ve been trying to buy more things second hand or from companies that follow fair trade practices.

On my wish list I’d asked for a fairly-made recycled glass pitcher, glass because it’s free of the toxins commonly found in plastic. (Yes I’m being assimilated by the granola-ites.)

Pitcher PerfectSo Dan took the kids to a giant antique shop where he spent over an hour walking them through the entire maze of breakable treasures looking for the exact right pitcher for me. He said he passed up several along the way, wanting to make sure he found one he knew I’d like. Be still my heart, it’s perfect! “Recycled” in the truest sense of the word, BPA-free and lovely. He couldn’t get me exactly what I wanted in time for Mother’s Day so he paid attention to the REASONS behind what I was asking for and got me something better.

At the store he let Laylee pick through every piece of jewelry she could find, advising her on my tastes. “Yes that IS pretty, but mom doesn’t really like to wear heart-shaped jewelry.” Heaven bless him for guiding her to a pretty bracelet I will actually WEAR! On the way home from the antique shop, they stopped for flowers.

I slept in late this morning and woke to find Laylee had created an avalanche of drawings for me, all on the theme of love, moms, mudders and LOVE. Dan made scrambled eggs with extra cheese.

From Magoo I got new non-slip potholders that match my KitchenAid perfectly and to top it off, I was presented with the final season of the West Wing so I can discover again whether Matt Santos, Latino for President, beats Allen Alda to become the next leader of these United States in Imaginary Political World Where I’m a Staunch Democrat.

And they were nice to me all day. And they made me breakfast. And I got to eat off the special plate. And Magoo magically fell asleep in the car on the way home from church and let me carry him inside and rock him like a baby for the better part of an hour, something he hasn’t let me do for months. It was a great day to be a mom and a great day to be married to Dan. How was your Mother’s Day? Was it a great day to be married to Dan for you too?

Greener Than Yesterday

April 15, 2008 by Kathryn

If you’ve read this blog for long, you know I’m not the stereotypical Seattle Eco-Mom, rallied round my family with a pocket full of granola. I’m acutally not sure anyone is that mom. I am trying to do better though. I’m making baby steps to a minty green type of life.

It’s exciting and I want to talk about it without driving everybody crazy or giving the impression that I’m an all-or-nothing Al Gore disciple. I just want to be healthy. I just want to feel like every aspect of my life is reaching towards harmony with my moral code.

If I truly believe that people should treat each other well and that the earth we live in is a gift, then I should be trying to buy more products that are produced fairly and with less pollution and less toll on the earth’s resources. It’s hard to do because I’m not rolling in money but I do lots of hard things. I think it’s possible to be healthy and have a positive impact on the planet without my brains exploding because I’m thinking too hard or draining my life savings.

I need help though. That’s where you come in. Starting today on SeattleMomBlogs.com, we’re counting down to Earth Day next Tuesday by encouraging women across the blogosphere to write about ways they’re being more mindful of the environment in their homes and in the world. Are you saving the planet, even just a little bit more than you were yesterday? Click over and find out what you can do to help. Throughout the week we’ll be giving away gDiapers, Method products, Gorgeously Green and more.

Passing the Cup

March 23, 2008 by Kathryn

Happy Easter world! It was a fabulous day. 3 of the 4 members of my family were down for the count with chest colds. 2 of the 3 members of my family who were down for the count with chest colds were still cheery. We saw at least 10 minutes of sun this afternoon, the promise of a summer to come and a reassurance that the sun has not yet imploded during this long dark Seattle winter. Maybe the sun did get snuffed out at some point this winter but it was reborn today. It is Easter after all.
easter-022
The bunny man found the grass we grew and hid treasures among its tender green shoots. I made my first lemon meringue pie from scratch, including separating the various parts of an egg and zesting citrus fruits. It was a joyful romp in the domestic arts. Let me tell you I’m SO glad I’m feeling well enough to romp a little at this point. Now that I’ve given away the apocalyptic chest cold of death to 3 immediate family members, I’m finally starting to get well. I’ve even enjoyed playing nurse to them. If only Dan were feeling well enough to take full advantage of my new role.easter-026

After breakfast this morning we had a little lesson about the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ. When we got to Gethsemane, we held up a small cup that we use while taking the sacrament at church. I explained that while Jesus was suffering in the garden, He pleaded with Heavenly Father to let the cup pass from Him but said that either way, He’d do God’s will.
easter-036
When Laylee looked puzzled, I explained that “letting the cup pass from Him” meant that He didn’t want to have to suffer so much but that He was willing to do it because He loved us so much and knew we needed Him to atone for our sins.

“Hmph,” she said. “So he did the atonement and THEN he passed the cup to the Deacons and they pass it to us.”

In our church the deacons are the 12-year-old boys whose priesthood responsibility it is to pass the sacrament each week with the water in those little cups.

Wrong cup. Right level of cuteness.

Easter Crafts

March 13, 2008 by Kathryn

It’s been much too long since I pimped my Seattle Mom Blogs site. It’s really turned into an awesome group blog and not just for women living in the Emerald City. We’ve got some great writers over there.

Although I signed up to write a food column, I get sidetracked a lot and today I’m sharing a fun Easter craft idea from my next door neighbor. Check it out.
