Okay, I’m a bit late but better late than never. I’ve been too busy hanging out with my pappy to stop and write about him. Alas, it’s only a week and a half until Fathers’ Day and we’d better plan something to make up for the fact that we did practically nothing for Dan’s birthday last month.
Oh? You did something for Dan’s birthday last month? Well, isn’t that special. You can relax then. Or maybe you could do something for your father or the father of your children on the 17th. I’m planning to focus on the big D.
Have you done something really cool in the past that you feel like sharing so the rest of us can steal it? Personally I have a really hard time coming up with gifts for the man-types in my life. Sure it’s fun to give multiple CDs every single occasion every year of our life, but I’d like to boost the surprise factor a little.

One year I was looking for the dude equivalent of the Mothers’ Day corsage. I came up with a Daddy necklace. Sounds cool, huh? It actually was. Laylee and I got a bunch of wooden letter beads and colored beads and spelled out various names Dan carries as a father.

Dan loves to wear it to church and then all day long on Sunday. Many of my friends said their husbands were not secure enough in their manhood to wear such an item. If your husband/father* is a manly man, he will love this gift.
On Fathers’ Day the Pater Familias gets to be free of all chores, nap in the afternoon and we make his favorite dinner, served on the “You are Special” plate.
*I am not insinuating that your husband and father are the same person. In this instance, the slash means “or.”
My husband wore the Santa tie my son bought him for Christmas at the dollar store to our big Christmas dinner. My son was so proud.
My boss once wore a big chunky wooden bead necklace to a business meeting. He put it on when his daughter gave it to him and then forgot he had it on.
Me? I let the kids paint my face around Halloween when I was paining their faces. Then I fogot and went ot the mall!
Charming got a little jealous after the Blog-fest weekend, so I am treating him to a week-end away from the kiddies with just me.
I don’t know if it’s appropriate as a FATHER’s day gift, you know us abandoning our children and all, but nonetheless, that’s what HE’S getting.

Alas, I will be checking back for ideas here as well. My dad usually gets a gift certificate to sportsman’s warehouse. And I once bought him bullets. I think he really liked that one, actually. I’m not sure ammo is such a universal gift idea, though.
One year I gave my husband a certificate that read:

Not having to bathe the kids for a WHOLE month: Priceless

My forte is finding Father’s Day cards that have to do with Bears. When I was little he was Big Teddy Bear and I was Little Teddy Bear. I don’t find one every year but when I do…
He and I have been really into fly fishing lately so I will more than likely get him something to do with that.
I have no idea what to tell you ladies, my dad had everything that he needed and what he did not need, he did not have. We always ended up taking him to dinner or something like that. Just treasure your fathers girls, there is nothing like a daddy. Mine passed away in 2003 and I would give anything to be looking for something to give him for father’s day right now. But knowing that I will see him again and that he is cancer free and running around heaven with my grandparents makes me feel much better.
In the past, I arranged for my dh to have a massage. He was in heaven. This year, he is getting a pedicure. I have married a bit of a princess…

My husband is getting an entire week with no kids and no wife and no school. I even offered to buy him a video game to fill up his time.
Even after a suckfest of a Mother’s Day I am that nice.

I know Hubs would enjoy a guilt-free day of golfing or something along those lines with friends or his brothers.
A mix CD of all kinds of songs dedicated to him is always fun.
For his 30th Birthday I threw a shmoozy dinner party for family and close friends and put together a “this is your life” slide show to music. He’s a great daddy and I highlighted that in a big way. The kids call it “The Daddy Movie” and he still feels special when we watch it. If you gather with family every year for Father’s Day you could combine the DVD to include all the generations of dads.
My husband bought himself an expensive fly-fishing rod a month ago. I thought that could be his present. He’s so picky and he usually likes to choose his own gifts. I may take emlouisa’s idea and let him have time alone for a few days–maybe I’ll go see my dad.
My husband usually buys himself something and I say, Well, that will be your Father’s Day present, ok? This year it was a new Palm Pilot. But then again, I buy my own gifts, too. I try to avoid giving him clothes, but sometimes he needs those, so I just buy them and try to pass them off as Father’s Day presents (cheap, I know).
For my dad or father-in-law, I like to give books, shirts, and this year it’s gift certificates to Supersonic Car wash –what man doesn’t like a clean shiny car?
If your DH is addicted to coffee like mine – the family likes to give him Starbuck’s gift cards. Hey at least the addiction isn’t coming out of our pockets!
Mine is tough because his birthday and Father’s Day are within days apart this year it’s 5 days. So I usually combine his gifts.
This year I asked all immediate family members to chip in and buy him the new video iPod. He has an iPod from when they first came out so this will be a total surprise. I’ve already got the checks in the mail to buy it! I just had them send what they would normally spend on him for a present. It worked out for everyone because now they don’t have to think of gifts to get our “highly techno/gadget” man!
I’m planning on making these with Capt’s kids this weekend: I’m going to buy a big faced clock from Staples, take it apart and paste photo cut outs of his kids over the numbers. He’d really like it.
Once I hand made a father’s day card out of duct tape and classified ads for tools. It was the coolest manly man cards ever.
Ok…so I don’t have a clue what I’m going to for my own DH but this year I came up with the best gift for my own daddy-o. I found mypublisher.com and was blown away!! You can have a picture book printed with 20 pages, leather or linen bound, 120 pictures for under $50!! And that includes the shipping! It takes a little bit of time and effort but I got together a bunch of old baby pictures of my sister and I, then a bunch of our boys now(both under 2), scanned all the old ones and used the websites free software to build my book. I haven’t seen the finished product just yet but it should be here in a few days and I can’t wait to see my dads face when he sees it! I sure I’ll be building a few more books in the future. I hope it turns out as well as I think it is.
Wow… these are all interesting and SO not in line with what I did for my father or do (occasionally) for my spouse.
Every year for both Father’s Day and Christmas we would go to the the hardware store and ask what the coolest new handtool thingy from Craftmans was.
When I do this now, it’s still my hubby’s favorite! Are no younger men do-it-yourselfers??
When we were little our favorite “gift” for daddy was “King for a Day”. It usually worked out to “King for the Evening” starting when he got home from work.
We’d clean clean clean the house, cover a big chair with a plush blanket, cover the big stockpot with construction paper (that was his footstool), make a crown out of tinfoil, etc. Momma would make his favorite dinner. Then when he walked in the door, we’d take his briefcase, lead him to his chair, take off his shoes…etc. You get the general idea. It was the best.
I have no idea what I am doing for my dad for Father’s Day. And this year I will actually be with him on the day, so I really need to think about this.
Buy a couple of the stretched canvas boards at Walmart or the craft store (cheaper at walmart). They have 8X10 size there. Give them a few brushes and some acrylic paint and have them each make a masterpeice for dad to hang in his office (or cube or whatever). This continues to work…year after year…as they mature….as do their skills. Eventually, they can do self-portraits which are REALLY awesome.

We classify mother’s/father’s day as more service holidays then gift holidays. So we usually give coupon books or homemade cards/crafts. Last year though I suprised my husband with pictures of googie in her ‘I love daddy’ shirt.
Also clueless. None of the fatherly men in my life have many extracurricular interests. They’re farily simple people (men? no! lol), which makes it tough.
I’m hoping to give birth to our first son for father’s day, but I guess I should have a backup plan since:
a)it’s been 10 years since one of our children arrived 2 days early, and
b) we’ve had 7 girls in a row.
I used to get my dad the tackiest tie that I could find. He would wear them proudly to work after Father’s Day. It was like a little joke that we shared. I had to stop because he finally told me that he had stopped wearing ties to work. 🙁
The all-time-favorite gift that he loved was a potato clock. It runs off the power in 2 potatoes. He had that on his desk at work and liked to see the looks on people’s faces when they would notice it. The clock really sucked the life outta those taters and they could get really shriveled and decrepit.

This year I not only did nothing for your husband’s birthday, but I’m planning a real doozy for my husband for Father’s Day. We’re going to travel internationally for 32 hours on Saturday (includes time change so IS NOT impossible!), he’ll get 4 hours sleep, and then has to speak in public on Father’s Day! Isn’t that the best? Top that if you can!
