Straight up now, tell me do you really wanna love me forever? Wo-oh-oh or am I caught in a hit and run? Straight up now, tell me is it gonna be you and me forever? Oh-oh-oh. Or are you just having fun?
When we were driving around this afternoon my, like, totally favorite Paula Abdul song ever came on the radio and while Magoo and I were rocking out, Laylee was listening to the lyrics.
“Mom? Can you please listen really well to this song and remember all the words so you can sing it to Dad when we get home?”
“Yeppers.”
I’d better do it quick and get to bed. Tomorrow morning I’ve got to get up early for an appointment with my brain professional. We’re back together and I’m moving forward with his happity-pappity pill poppily recommendations. Some people are near-sighted and need glasses. Other people are physically superior in nearly every possible way (a-hem!) but somehow end up needing a gray-matter chemistry set.
Dan met me at my last appointment and I’m glad he did because he didn’t let me downplay the symptoms I’m still having. I tend to think that if I snag a better attitude, all of my problems will just DEES-appear. And I was in a great mood on the way to the doctor’s office.
How could I not have been? I turned on the radio and Boyz II Men were singing. They’d started a group and there they were kickin’ it just. for. me. Dan helped me overcome my Motown Philly-induced euphoria and keep it real with the doctor.
So, yeah. I’ve gotta go sing Dan that song. And maybe Cold Hearted Snake. You have to admit – Paula Abdul had a lot of really great hits in her day.

Now I am going to have my teenager hood in my head ALL DAY! Thanks~ DO you remember the cat in the begining of the video??? PLEASE tell me I’m not the only one…..
Liz says
I am proud of you, and glad Dan is going with you.
And I love that song too!! that’s not the one I’m singing to Chris though, we’re still in the singing the slow songs stage so we have longer to look into each other’s eyes…. AHEM
Rocks in my Dryer says
Straight up. Good for you.
chris says
Good for you! I too am superior in every way except for the brain matter chemistry. Oh well, we wouldn’t want to be THAT perfect.
Sketchy says
Good for you, and can I put in a request for Vibeology?
Oh and wasn’t the cat from “Opposites Attract”?
bon says
I remember a dancing cat… but i couldn’t tell you which video it was from. I CAN tell you that I am now stuck with that song be-bopping in MY grey matter now. Thanks for that. NOT!

Sounds like things are up from yesterday. Is that the chemistry set talking? I think I need me a good set. Thanks for calling (yes, everyone, the famous DYM called ME and now I get to bask in the glory) cause I needed it. BTW, I put it in the fridge. In front of the milk and water. Nothing. Multiple forays into the deep, and NOTHING!
Karen says
Oh yeah. LOVED me some Paula back in the day.
Erin says
The just don’t make music like they used to.
Nantie Meg says
Love you. love you. loffe you. Please bring the Paula and the Debbie and the Boyz II the airport when you come and get me. 🙂 maybe we can freak people in trucks out and make them laugh like we did in Montana.
Nantie Meg says
PS – The cat was from two steps forward, two steps back.

My best friend and I coreographed dances to all of Paula’s hits. I could probably still do the dance to Cold Hearted Snake, although it wouldn’t be pretty.
Good luck with the brain professional. Nothing wrong with a personal chemistry set for your head. Nothing at all.
Carrie says
Well, now I know what the mental soundtrack to my day today is going to be 🙂
Hope the appointment goes well!

When I was in High School I played fast pitch softball (but was used to slow pitch) My Mom bribed me that she would by me a record if I got a hit (yes….I said RECORD, as in an LP) That particular Paula Abdul album is what I chose…I still have it, along with NKOTB Hangin’ Tough. (Hangin’ my head in shame).
As for brain chemistry…we do what we have to do to get through. Its a blessing to live in a time when we have access to things that can help us to live a more balanced emotional life. Just 20 years ago there was so much more stigma attached to that kind of thing, and while not everyone has gotten over that…most people are realizing that it is much more common, and getting the help that they need. I have been there, done that.

Back in the day? Come on! Paula Abdul still rocks…haven’t you seen her uber-cool dance moves on American Idol? Hee hee
Yeah, and thanks for choosing my song of the day for me!
PS- I will shortly be following your courageous lead by scheduling my own grey-matter organization appointment. Thanks for sharing your struggles, now I know I’m not the only one!

I am glad to know I am not the only one who remembers the lyrics to these songs 🙂 !!
And my little girl is always making comments like this:
“Mom? Can you please listen really well to this song and remember all the words so you can sing it to Dad when we get home?”
So funny!

~sigh~ I missed so much of the music of my youth by virtue of being a complete dork.
Chemistry set made me giggle. I think I’ll call mine that from now on. I tried going off awhile back, cold turkey. They’re really, really, really serious when they say not to do that! Just sayin’. I felt better a half hour of taking my first pill. Placebo effect? Possibly, but I think not. =) Good luck!

How weird that I was singing that to my husband word for word the other day, I don’t know where it came from, but I asked him “Is it sad that I know every single word of this song? He said “no, I was just thinking it was sad that I could sing all the words with you!” Then we busted out together with the “d-do ya love me do you love me, COME ON NOW! Do do ya love me do you love me, tell me baby!”
heather says
you go girl. good for you for being true to yourself and for recognizing your need for help. Only YOU know the right decision for you, but in our culture sometimes its hard to admit you need help and you can’t do it alone.
Keep us posted on how the magic beans are working 🙂

I just bought a Paula Abdul CD on ebay. I love her songs. And there was a cat in the video for “Opposites Attract”. The video for “Straight Up” is a cool black & white one.
J. Fergie says
Ok, ALL of those songs are totally my favorites. “Motown Philly back again….Doin’ a little East Coast swaang…” I’m willing to bet that you’re an Immaculate Collection gal too? Hello Sister!
Paula Abdul rocked. I don’t care how washed out she is now 🙂 Glad your appointments are going well. I have my third this week.
Heather from One Woman's World says
You are the weirdest, and I love you!

Motown Philly-induced euphoria. Who wouldn’t be in a great mood after that? You are too funny. I hope the appt. went well.
Poppa2B says
I listen to her as well, but sometimes it does make me feel a little old.
Side note on Brain Chem stuff; it’s very important that husband attends those visits. You may not be aware of certain changes being caused by the treatment. Also, I have found that other parts of the body are impacted. Kidney & liver are most impacted. Watch for Chem build up.
