I’ve officially decided that I have too many purses. Remember the priceless family heirlooms I allegedly tossed in the landfill a couple of weeks ago? Well it turns out that they were in the zipper pouch of the OTHER purse I took on vacation and not the one I cleaned out. So Dan and I are still officially married and I feel officially sheepish and very grateful.
I usually pray when I lose something and 9 times out of 10 I find it right away. This time however I was too sure that the rings were gone forever to bother praying for help. I just accepted my ringless fate. Possibly there was a part of me that was hoping to cash in on Scout’s suggestion to add a few carats here or there when we replaced the set… for comfort.
But they’re back and I have a renewed love for them.
In other news, my 20-year-old dryer that’s painted a color which indicates that it’s impossible to find replacement parts for it, finally bit the big one. Dan performed an autopsy this weekend and it looks like one of the thingies is snorgled and there’s no recovering.
Luckily the drying racks I ordered weeks ago showed up in the mail within 5 minutes of me discovering that the dryer had surrendered to the sopping towels in its belly. I guess I’ll be finding out what it’s like to line dry for REAL over the next couple of weeks as we research various dryers. Anyone in love with theirs? Any good recommendations?
We have the front loading Whirlpool. Energy efficient and oh, so lovely.

ooh I totally want one of those dryers that STEAMS so your clothes get all unwrinkled.

Maytag has been good to us. And until then, FYI, I hear the laundry mat in our little town is actually quite clean, efficient and friendly. (That is assuming your neighbors aren’t home or something because that is who we use first on our street when these crucial appliances go out!) Also, you probably already know this but it took me awhile to realize that you can join the Consumer Reports on a monthly basis, for just like $5. I always thought you had to join them for the year at like $50. I always appreciate their advice on these types of things. That’s my two cents worth at midnight 🙂
My sister got LG and I highly recommend them. Apparently they are the real washers and dryers of many brands, but with different labels slapped on, but recently started selling by their true identity in the US. They’re stuff is pretty space-agey looking and sounding, but man do they do a good job. It’s what I’ll be getting when I have to replace my stuff. Best Buy and Sears carry this brand.

it you truly are committed to being as “green” as possible- we have some neighbors that are- they have a giant line in thier back yard where they dry everything out on that line. BUT, maybe where you live it’s too rainy for that. I don’t know. If so, maybe you have an out. haha.
I hear the front loaders are the BEST- but I wouldn’t know becuase when our SUPER old dryer died we just went to Lowes and purchased the cheapest one they had!! haha! I guess I don’t value my laundry cleaning machines quite enough to spend the “BIG BUCKS’ on them. YET.

As for dryers, my philosophy has always been the larger capacity the better – thus avoiding extra loads, don’t you know?
I’ve had the largest capacity Maytag for about 6 years now and it’s been 100% reliable.

I thought maybe you’d dropped your rings in the dryer, short-circuiting everything. Finding them in a purse pocket is much better though.

We just bought a new washer and new dryer not too long ago… I wanted a high efficiency washer and after an extensive conversation with the dryer man at Lowes (yep… the dryer man. It’s all he does.) we learned that while the High Efficeincy washers are definately different and more efficient than their less expensive, less efficient counterparts, there isn’t really a whole lot of difference with the dryers. So, I got a super capacity, middle of the road dryer, also by Whirlpool. It was only about 400 bucks, as opposed to the matching silver shiny dryer that was the pair to my washing machine that would have cost me $1000. The dryer man said most people pay the premium price for the dryer too because they want a matched set, but really there isn’t a difference. Unless you get the new fancy steam one. I like my mismatched set… it reminds me everytime I wash clothes that I made a frugal choice. Good luck in your dryer searching… I”m impressed that you are using drying racks while doing research. I think I would have driven to the store the second mine broke!
I think we have the no bells and whistles dryer by Kenmore. That thing has run faithfully for 10 years with nary a repairman call.
(A friend of mine who had the front loading washer /dryers said that she would never buy the ones with the electronic panels again. Those machines have an automatic lock on them when they’re running and when hers went kaput, they had to break the door off to get the laundry out. She’s back to the no bells and whistles model and she loves it much more than the fancy one she had.)
And congrats on finding your rings! Nothing like “Something old, something new (again), something lost, something found” to bring back some intense feelings of love to the man who gave them to you in the first place.

As for dryers – I’ve got my eye on those Electrolux ones. Heck, anything would be better than the one I have! Good luck, I can’t wait to hear all about it!
I have a dryer but try to use it as little as possible (about once or twice a month on average) and use drying racks the rest of the time. Really, using the drying racks isn’t that bad and can save a lot of money AND the environment at the same time.

again with the mismatched w/d set – my dryer I got FO’ FREE 9 years ago, used, when I bought my washer. It only needed a new wheel that turns the drum, otherwise it sounded like 100 pairs of sneakers inside. Check the scratch and dent section.

That gold colour sort of screams “GOOD LUCK FINDING PARTS”, doesn’t it? I love my dryer, which my mom bought us for a wedding gift after two years of using a laundremat. I don’t know if it’s particularily commendable,though.

REmember, all dryers are basically “front loaders” without the see-thru door. Go for capacity.

I can seriously relate to this post. Our dryer shot craps last week. Hubby’s like “I can fix it”. Good Lord…here we go again.
We’re on day 5, and he’s still not found the time to “fix it”. I have laundry hanging *everywhere*. At this point, I’m considering putting up an outdoor clothes line.
Sigh…

I want to know more about your drying racks! I too would like to use my dryer less. We had a fantabulous free-to-us-from-my-MIL gas dryer, but there was no way to hook it up in this rented home. So I got an electric one for $30 (delivered!) from a guy on Craigslist. Now I need to unload the gas one that’s just sitting here. Too bad it’s too far of a drive for you because it is a good, high-quality dryer. It’s only crime is needing a gas line.
My suggestion is Freecycle, Craigslist, and scratch & dent, in that order. Then even when you run it on a rainy day it will still be a frugal, earth-saving choice.
Oh, and on the “please update me” note, how’s the laundry soap? I hear that once you get the old residues out of your clothes the line drying won’t make your clothes Stiffly Stiffersons. True?
