Just Take a Plate of Cookies

May 8, 2007 by Kathryn

Note to self: When meeting the new people next door, say something innocuous like, “Welcome” or “Cute kid you got there.”

Do not compliment them in detail on their bold new kitchen décor… in their kitchen you cannot see from the front door… in their house that you’ve never set foot in.

When speaking to a stranger you hope to become friends with, it’s never a good idea to begin a sentence with the words, “Not that I was looking in your windows, but when I was looking in your windows I noticed…”

Awkward.

when looking through your windows, I noticed some dust bunnies beside your bed. Oops, wait… is that awkward given that I live NOWHERE near you???

Totally off topic, sort of. Have you ever noticed that the word “awkward” is, in and of itself, awkward? Both in spelling and look.

    But perhaps it’s just me.

So, have they packed themselves back up and moved out yet? 🙂

Probably it’s a good idea to leave your binoculars and zoom lens at home too…

ha! when we’re walking through our neighborhood, the Mister never lets me go peek in windows of empty houses! although there is one family that lives a couple blocks away that ALWAYS has their tv going and their drapes open, so we know exactly what shows they watch, what teams they root for, etc….

The world would be a better place if it were socially acceptable to peek in neighbors’ windows and then admit to doing so.

    Wait – no it wouldn’t.

hahaha … hey, do you live across the street from me? Oh, no that’s the grumpy 60 year old man that sits up and looks out the window every time we move! We call him “nosey parker”. In his defence, he came in very handy when some looser tried to steal from the mommyknows-mobile in the early hours of the a.m.! He called the RCMP and they came and told us he’d foiled the crime! Handy-dandy nosey neighbours are like a free security service.

I think your comments show that you are a sincere, fun, and open person. They would be nutty not to be your friend.

That is so funny! We have new neighbors too after not having neighbors for 5 years and we don’t know how to act either. I dread going out and watering the flowers because I am sure they are looking at me. I try to angle myself to make my butt look smaller. How stupid is that?

You could leave a baby monitor outside their window so you can hear what they really think of you.

I had this conversation recently, but it was my neighbors looking through our windows! They aren’t as cute as you, though. And I think they just want to spy on how a pastor’s family lives. WHATever.

A neighbor brought us a plate of cookies one year near Christmas, but I had never met her, and I didn’t actually know who she was. I was afraid to eat the cookies and threw them out. The next year when she came I said. “Who are you?” Then I felt stupid when she pointed to the house across the street. At least we can recognize each other at the post office now. It was one of those things where we waved and etc, but never met face to face before, and I never got a good enough look to recognize her. I should have been peeking in her windows I guess.

Well at least you have something to laugh about now between the two of you, that always helps in the friendship process. Well, as long as she’s not afraid of you, that is.

One of my favorite family traditions is that after Thanksgiving we all take a walk. We don’t do this for the exercise. We don’t do this for the opportunity to chat. We do this so that, as we walk, we can look in people’s windows and see what they’re doing. Just from the sidewalk, of course. We also critique their homes and yards, but in the nicest possible way, of course.

    Funny stuff!

Our house backs up against a levee so we have people walking back there and looking in at us all the time. I thought nothing of it until my MIL was shocked that they were actually looking in our yard. I had to tell her that it’s what we do when we walk on the levee too. Like Kittyhox, we only critique nicely though. If we don’t have anything nice to say we talk about the birds and other critters in the nature area on the river side of the levee.
