Day One – A Day of Buts

November 3, 2009 by Kathryn

Today Dan went back to work but we all survived.

He left for work while I was still sleeping and I was sad that he didn’t say goodbye, but he called shortly after I woke up to tell me he loved me.

I got Laylee to school on time but forgot to put in her hearing aids and told her to buy lunch instead of me making it.

My baby cried a lot but when I do this:
bubba-smiles
Sometimes she does this:
bubba-smiles2
The sun shone in Seattle so I took Magoo outside to play but we came back in too quickly because the baby was cold.

I made dinner for my dinner co-op but I had to ask Erin to bring me some ingredients that I’d forgotten so I wouldn’t have to wake up Wanda to go to the store.

I survived all day but I did need to call on Stephanie for help getting Laylee from the bus stop after my hip seized up and I had to lie on the couch for an hour with pain killers and a heating pad.

Laylee and Magoo were definitely in sugar withdrawals today but they never completely melted down and they even helped a ton with the wee bairn.

I voted in the election but I didn’t get my vote in until 15 minutes before the “polls” closed.

We now all use absentee ballots instead of “polls” in Washington State but there was still a sense of civic camaraderie as the hordes of procrastinators met at the library to stuff their envelopes into one of the few vote boxes scattered around the county.

It was a rough day and I couldn’t have made it through without the help of my friends and the encouragement of my family but as I drove home tonight with my music blasting and the stars shining I was happy with no buts.

I think I can do this.

Your baby is beautiful and so are you. I cannot imagine dealing with three little ones, you’re doing a great job and I know you will get the hang of it quickly!

    You can totally do this!

I actually found the transition from 2-3 much easier than going from 1-2. For some reason, once you’re used to hauling two kids around anyway, one more doesn’t seem to make that much of a difference. Plus, the older ones are more self-sufficient, and you’ve been a mom for long enough that there’s not much a baby can do that leaves you totally scratching your head, or running for the hills.

I found that my only issue was remembering to get everyone in the car when we went out. I’d buckle the boys in, get in the car, pull out of the driveway, and then remember that the baby was all ready to go in her carseat . . . in the house. That, and the laundry was a nightmare as the baby had reflux. We’re talking Linda Blair-style-head-spinning-projectile-vomiting fun.

I know you can do it. You’re amazing! thank goodness for a network of loving friends and for little baby smiles…isn’t it amazing how they can turn a day around? She is gorgeous and I love it that she can already be all interactive with you.

You can definitely do this. If you go back and look at that list and don’t pay attention to the buts, you got a darn lot of stuff done in one day, especially for a new mom. And there’s no shame in having other people help out. Doing everything by yourself can be lonely. Embrace the blessing of folks willing to help out, and realize how very much you ARE doing.

I’m so proud of you – especially knowing that you got your ballot in yesterday!

And I’m praying that I’ll hear you say how much easier it gets!!!!! Of course, with one in school, and the other potty trained, you’re already way ahead of me!

Ours will be 26 months, and 45 months when #3 arrives…sooooo…I’ll have all 3 with me for the first 6 months until the school year kicks in and the oldest is at preschool a couple days a week. Sigh.

I’m even more impressed with you that you were able to keep your dinner co-op commitment!

And a day of the color blue, according to these color coordinated pictures.
Of course you can do it! Not perfectly, of course, don’t allow that sinister, conniving notion anywhere near you. Go forth, and do it imperfectly!! Yes!

Yes, you can do this and that’s what family and friends are for. It’s a blessing to be able to help the ones we love and care about.
    Wanda is adorable!
