Austrians With British Accents? What the VonTrapp?

September 28, 2006 by Kathryn

I shed a little this week. Okay, I shed a lot. Laylee said, “You look like somebody else’s mom.” I wasn’t sure I was happy with the result until I walked past a mirror yesterday. Staring back at me was my face with Fräulein Maria’s haircut. This I like.

I’m not Austrian. I can’t speak with a British accent. I prefer the name Dan to Georg. I only know four chords on the guitar. I never wanted to become a nun.

But I like the hair, and I adore bursting into song while Dan and I are making out in a solarium full of blue studio lighting meant to simulate moonlight. So, I’m pretty much Julie Andrews reincarnated. Is she deceased? If not, she probably wants her hair back.

hairhair side

I am relieved that I like the hair. You may remember the last time I drastically changed it and it wasn’t pretty.

On a random side note, I came into the living room the other day to find my guitar case laying on its side. I asked Laylee if she knocked it over. She said, “No, I didn’t. I was just jumping on it and singing a song.” I haven’t had the heart to open the case yet and survey the damage. Fräulein Maria probably wouldn’t confront Laylee openly either. She’d guilt her into bawling about it at dinner, causing a tremendous bout of indigestion.

“She’d guilt her into bawling about it at dinner”

Ha! It’s like the dark side of “The Sound of Music” that I’d totally forgotten about. But so true.

I like to new style. I’m itching to go short myself. Not because of lice or anything – just because I get that itch once in a while.

That is the cutest picture in the history of new haircut pictures.

You look awesome. I love the new look.

You will have to let us know how the guitar made out!

Julie Andrews lives! In fact, the Screen Actors’ Guild has just honored her with a SAG 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award. See http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/news.php?id=4541.

    The haircut? Tres cute.

I think your hair really draws attention to your eyes, which are beautiful, and which I’d never really looked at before. Yay new haircut! I’m glad you posted an updated photo of yourself (so I can recognize you sometime soon)!

Plus Julie Andrews is about the classiest lady on the screen now that Audrey Hepburn’s gone (and now that I think about it, she IS gone, isn’t she?) Nice new look.

Aw, very cute! So, when are you adding on the 12 kids and super-huge mansion to go with the Sound of Music theme? 🙂

I love the haircut. It is fabulous. I always did like Maria’s hair. Also thanks for the rest of the post because it made me laugh, and I needed it.

Okay, I admit that if you had asked if you should do it I would have said No. But. That’s because I have no imagination, apparently. Because look how adoreable you are! I really love it!

It does make your eyes look very sparkly, as previously noticed. And also thin. That’s always a bonus for me because I freak out that when I get a haircut my double chin might be more noticeable. Clearly not an issue for you. 🙂

Cute! I’ve always toyed with the idea of a shortie hair cut, but never go shorter than a chin-lenght bob. Good for you!

Austrians with English accents, ah, fun.

Glad you’re loving the new do! It’s very cute, and very Maria. Now, you’ve just got to have at least 5 more kids to keep up with her and the Captain. 🙂

Best part of short hair? Much less work to make it look good while the munchkins try to climb your legs and yank the blowdrier out of the wall.

Thanks for the pictures. I was dying over here to see whaat it looked like. I like it. I like you. Laylee will get used to it. You look really cute. (It’s totally unlike the man-cut I got for you in the 1st grade. Thank heavens!)

  31. Shalee says

I love the hair. It looks very easy to do and liking it yourself is all the more reason to love it.

When my girl was almost one, I did the same thing. She kept looking at me, but didn’t know what to think of me. She knew the voice, but not the hair. Poor girl, just cried and cried. Now that I think about it, so did I. I hated the cut.

    Yours looks darling, daring one!

Cute! Cute! Cute! I am the opposite of you right now. I had really short hair for a long time and now, for some reason I haven’t put my finger on yet, I got a bee in my bonnet and have decided to grow it out. This process started back in February and I’m in the “ick” stage.

  35. irene says

I love your new look! It’s always hard to have a drastic haircut. I remember going from having my hair half-way down my back to having it as short as yours is now. I couldn’t see what the hairdresser was doing because when I take off my glasses, I’m as blind as a bat. So when I saw the results for the first time, I was aghast and HATED it! But later I began to like it.

One of my friends said we should always reserve judgement about new haircuts until 2 weeks after the cut. Because by then the hair has grown out a little bit and settled into the ‘look’ and style. I’ve found that she’s right.

DYM, I love the hair! Also your titles always make me laugh, you’re so creative. By the way, I do think you can use this new do to your advantage….the next time the kids are driving you crazy, you can point to your hair and say, “Remember when mommy said that you were driving her so crazy she was going to pull her hair out? If you keep up that whining/ screaming/ tamtrum etc., I might not have any hair left!” Afterall, what is motherhood if you can’t use guilt?

I’m not saying this because I think you are the Queen of Blogtopia (even if I do think you are), or to make you feel better because you now look like someone else’s mom:
Your new hairdo is great, the floating head looks great and you are still the Queen.
    That’s all.

I am going to use “what the Von Trapp?!” for my new non-swear saying.

Love the hair!! You are WAY braver than I was in 8th grade when I got mine cut short. It was more the “man-cut” that your mom aluded to. ah yes, yours is SOOO much cuter. 🙂

P.S. Did everyone catch that the Captain is the crochety dad in “The Lakehouse”? Oh, you did a review of that movie. Maybe you mentioned that. I, however, am too lazy to go back and check. But DID enjoy the movie.
