A Really Keen Giveaway

November 23, 2008 by Kathryn

**A winner has been chosen**

I’ve come to realize that there are 3 kinds of people in this world, those who wear and love Keens, those who covet Keens in a way that Moses would greatly disapprove of, and those who’ve never heard of them.

So for those of you in category 3, here’s a rundown of why I love Keen to encourage you to join categories 1 or 2. If you still need convincing after reading this, visit their new website and I’m sure you’ll be hooked.

1. They’re environmentally and socially responsible. Much of their products are made from reused or recycled material. They use environmentally friendly manufacturing processes, give back to the community, and are working through a Fair Labor certification process. There are so many companies who have jumped on this bandwagon half-heartedly but I get the impression that Keen really means to make a difference in the industry and the world. Their company was founded on these principles 5 years ago and they keep taking their commitment to the next level.
2. They’re based in the Northwest so we’re neighbors and likely soon to be BFFs.
3. Their design is smart and their shoes are well-made, rugged and durable.
4. Handbags. You just have to look. Trust me.
5. Everything they make is gorgeous.
Wear Around MJ
Now you’re asking yourself, “Why is Kathryn giving me a big fat advertisement for Keen?” Firstly because I like em so darn much and secondly because they want to give one of you a Christmas present. An awesome Christmas present, a present of which I am totally jealous in a hypocritical I-enabled-this-so-why-am-I-freaking-out-with-envy sort of way.

Betty BootHead over to the site and look through everything. May I suggest the Ridgelines, Betty Boots, Palermo Boots or Palermo MJs?

How about a pair of classic Newports or Wear Around MJs?

bag_bettyAnd let’s face it. If it were me, I’d spend a good long time checking out their laptop bags and handbags. I’ve particularly got my eye on the Oswego and the Betty bag. The day packs are also delicious but I’d feel like I’d end up sharing them with my family and honestly, who wants that?

So yes. Go to the site. Pick out something you can’t live without and come back here and tell me what it is in the comments section of this post. Next Sunday night I will choose one random winner to rule them all who will receive a coupon code good for one free item of your choice from the Keen website. That’s right ladies and you 3 gentlemen. The winner gets to pick any one thing you want. Squeee! I’m so excited.

Here’s the bonus. If you post about the contest on your own site with a link back to this page, then come back here leaving a second comment with a link to your post, you’ll be entered twice.

But wait. There’s more. When the contest ends, I have a coupon code for everyone else to get free shipping on anything you order from the site.

So everyone wins. And the peasants rejoice. Now go. Window shop. Come back and report your findings.

Well this is hard. How am I supposed to choose between being propelled to the fringe of nature and letting my cold weather excitement spill over? I ask you. It’s a tough choice, but I think I may have to book my next vacation in the place where fun, freedom and fashion converge.

I’ve never encountered an online store where the descriptions are so fun to read. Do they have a blog?

Oh Kathryn, I desperately want those Winthrop boots. And the Palermos are a close second. I will tell you why I deserve to be the winner, so you can channel me during your random choosing: I am terrified of the winter. I’ve been buying up wool sweaters and corduroys from the thrift stores, and asking all the parents and in-laws for silk long johns and wool socks, since those things are apparently desirable enough that people never give them to the thrift stores. I’ve had the same winter shoes for 6 years now, and the faux fur lining is worn right through at the heel and the toes. Because I wear them in the house and out, all winter long. I have some crazy hypersensitivity to cold (somebody suggested the other day that it might be hypothyroidism, which, coincidentally, would explain the depression and panic attacks).

Did you shed a tear for me yet? Should I go on? I’ll throw in the unrelated fact that I gave myself a lye burn the other day while making soap that didn’t turn out.

    • The Daring One says

      November 24, 2008 at 9:57 am

Many many tears have I shed for you. I hope you don’t freeze man. We should talk about that other stuff. Similarities abound.

You are so making me break the covet commandment right now. It was too hard chooseing. I’m going to pick the Men’s Ridgeline for my teenage son. And then I’m going to go right ahead and keep breaking that commandment because I want some too. But it would be an awesome Christmas present for my boy.

I will post a link to your contest on my blog sometime today.

I’m a self-confessed #1 Keen fan. My favorite pair is my Saratoga II, which currently reside at my backdoor as I wear them for the hourly ‘potty’ trips with my furry twins. The twins even love them so much they put their noses inside and take a nap cuddled around them (do my feet stink?). If they use them for a chew toy, there is no evidence. Can they be this rugged? Not that I want to find out. Since this pair is a sexy sling back, I think I’ll go for something completely different to expand my love of Keen’s. A warm pair of boots is on my list. I’m really fond of the Wintrop Boot. DId you notice the corset back (is this a theme for me?). They might be the best thing for a trip to Winthrop – my favorite rustic shopping town. Ever been? I’ll be off to Winthrop in my Winthrops.

    November 24, 2008 at 8:05 am

Oh my. Ever since hearing about them earlier this year, I’ve been wishing for some. I’d love the Palermo or the Sydney, and then there’s the whole Laguna style for ocean kayaking in the summer. But if I’m really nice, and since my toes really aren’t in danger of going naked yet, I’d get my husband either a pair of Lagunas for when he leads kayaking trips or Whistlers because that’s as close as he will get to dress shoes and we live just a few hours from the place for which they are named. And men, including my husband, need more than two pair of shoes outside of mountaineering boots and climbing shoes – no matter what they tell you.

I would love the black slate and grayed jade betty boot. I can’t live without them because my in-laws are snow-enthusiasts, and I am not currently prepared. My in-laws own a cabin in the mountains, in the woods that they built (by hand) themselves. They go there for holidays and throughout the year. It is a quiet and beautiful place to go, but until this past weekend I had never been there with significant snow. I’ve heard the stories about their snow ball fights, their sledding (night and day) and their sledding trails weaving amongst the trees – but I had never been a witness or invited to participate. Unfortunately, I don’t have a pair of snow boots, or snow pants, or a good-for-playing-in-the-snow winter coat. I have a pretty, flowy black winter coat and ankle-high fleecy boots… but they get wet and cold pretty quick. My In-laws ALL own knee high boots that snow will never penetrate. I was left out of the fun, relegated to sniper snowball attacks from the protected porch. I desperately need a good pair of snow boots!

This is my second comment. I forgot to put my link to the first comment, but here is the text of the first comment that I wrote at 8:05 a.m. your time today….

“Oh my. Ever since hearing about them earlier this year, I’ve been wishing for some. I’d love the Palermo or the Sydney, and then there’s the whole Laguna style for ocean kayaking in the summer. First off, don’t punish me simply because I don’t have a blog….I know, I can only be entered once because I’m not blog-proficient yet 🙁

However I must tell you how Keen’s saved my life. I have an 11 year old daughter that apparently has some sensory issues when it comes to her feet. For one year she would only wear these certain shoes I could only find at Payless simply because she could wiggle her toes in them. Then, once school is out and summer hits, it is only flip-flops, that’s it! Well, then come this summer when Grandma and Grandpa are taking her to Disneyland. Grandma politely tells me that should won’t take a grandaughter to Disneyland wearing flip flops every day…oh, and the Payless shoes are not being made any more. What is a Mom to do? Welcome Keens. I must admit, I was not to ‘keen’ on the price after shopping at Payless for this girl for several years. However, after Grandma convinced me, I caved and spent more money for my 11 year old daughter on a pair of shoes than I think I have ever spent on a pair of shoes for myself. As you can suspect, by the end of the summer, I was telling everyone that that was the BEST $100 I’ve ever spent! Thank you Keens! Of course now she needs a pair she can also wear in the winter which is why you must choose me for this offer!

OK: mother of 5 boys chiming in here! I don’t usually use that as a maneuver for sympathy, but here it only makes sense. These feet deserve their first Keens -they have active kiddos to run after. I’d totally pick the Berkeley or Palermo Mary Janes. Cute. Classy. Versatile. And easy to slip on as I run out the door!

And I have fallen in love, I am daydreaming about the Alameda computer bag (black) because I have convinced myself that it will be the perfect mommy/toddler bag. The rugged construction, the inspired and many organized pockets. Sigh, if only I had not seen another bag first, but the hubby will never let me replace an ok bag.

I’m a very indecisive person, it would take a long long time for me to pick only one thing…I had no idea they had so many different shoes, even mjs! I had only seen the Keen’s water shoes. As for the site: I love that when you can move your mouse over the shoes you can see all the color options. I think the pink and burgundy ones are very pretty, but if I was buying them I would most likely talk myself into a conservative (goes with everything) blue or brown. But there’s just too much to choose from. I agree the calistoga shoe and the mjs are very cute, but I would probably get a running type shoe. I’d have to go to a store to see which one fits my narrow kangaroo foot best. I’d have to ask someone, who has shoe know how, which shoe, for my foot, would be best to train in for a marathon…and then that’s what I would get. They all look extremely comfortable. My parents and sister’s family each have a pair (or two) of the water ones (which was the first time I heard of keens) and they love them… If I HAD to pick right now, I’m guessing, I would pick the ridgeline trailhead shoes in barogue rose. Because they are very pretty and look like they would wear well for a running shoe and not look dirty really fast. I wish I could see the bottom of the shoe…I need lots of arch support…and I’d have to make sure they weren’t too tall on the sides for my ankle bone. But these are really cute! So I guess that’s what I’d get.

Woo, I love the Chamonix in Army. My husband has been wearing Keen shoes for the past couple of years. I had to talk him into getting some, he said they were funky, but now he loves them.

Oh boy! I totally (heart) Keens so it is a tough choice. I’ve narrowed my choices to two. Option one is if I am feeling generous I would get the Morrison day pack to replace my husband backpack that was stolen a couple weeks ago. Option two if I am feeling selfish is the Targhee II walking shoes so I can get out in the Seattle rain and splash in the puddles.

I didn’t even realize I was a Keens fan until I saw the sandals we bought my toddler on their site. So, if I was to pick an item out, I’d choose a pair of their sneakers for him for the winter: http://www.keenfootwear.com/product.aspx?p=524&pc=1493.

The Morrison Daypack for my love, my hubby. Would be perfect for his bicycle commute, which is awkward at the moment due to big ol Jansport bag from college that isn’t lasting us much longer.
    Definitely for my man!!

I admit I have a deep love of shoes so it is impossible to only choose one soooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I narrowed it down to four:
Napa, portola, winthorp boot or Chamonix boot.

Any one of them would bring much much foot joy. Happy holidays everyone!!!

That’s a huge decision, but at the moment (since I have a snowballs chance in you know where – I’ve NEVER won anything. Seriously, 4 years of playing bingo in spanish class in high school and naught a win, big sigh), I really like the weararound MJs, in blue because that’s my son’s favorite color (which he insists on telling everyone. I think the entire state of MN knows his favorite color). I’ll keep my fingers, toes, eyes, etc crossed. Oughtta make for an interesting couple days….

The wear around MJs are the cutest things I have ever seen. I am CRAZY in love with them, I tell you. I wish I had a current blog so that I could be entered 2x or better yet, a bazillion current blog sites, so I could be entered that many times. They are just that cute and look really comfortable. My legs have been aching lately and I think they would be just the thing to help cushion the tile floor trauma. OH, Please pick me!!!

Wow, you’ve got a lot of entries for this one. I’ll give it a try anyway. I hadn’t heard about Keens, but after looking at their website, I know they are the shoes that I’ve seen and coveted on other’s feet. We just got back from a trip and I was wishing I had some shoes like the Trailhead walking sandals, maybe Mystic variety. I saw someone wearing some of those and knew I needed to get some shoes like that soon for the right mix of breathability and comfortable walkability. But my day pack also disintigrated on the trip, so one of their daypacks would also be very useful.
