When I was a teenager driving my parents’ cars around, I would periodically hear a strange noise. After listening to it for a few days, I would get around to describing the noise to my skeptical dad. He would then take a ride in the car and of course the sound would be nowhere to be heard.
The same thing is happening now with the baby’s movements and my baby-daddy. I’m past the 20 week point and feeling the baby move a lot. He seems to especially love when I work on my laptop. It’s possible also that he hates it but when I’m typing, he’s on the MOVE. I chose to believe he’s having a geeked-out party in there, excited for the day when he will sit on the couch with the rest of the family, all be-lap-topped himself.
One night Dan came to bed after I was already asleep and he says he thinks he felt the baby move when he put his hand on my belly. Since then, I’ve been excited to share these moments with him. Whenever I feel “Big Cheese/Lightbulb” move or hiccup, I grab Dan and pull him over. “He’s moving. Feel the baby!”
He quickly puts his hand on my baby and the baby plays dead. Complete limpness occurs. I am suddenly a liar. All I can feel is my own heart beating. Dan humors me and moves his hand around a bit before smiling and continuing on with what he was doing before my false alarm.
I have to tell you how much better the pregnancy is now that I can feel the baby moving around inside. The barfing all seems just a bit less annoying now that I can feel a person moving around keeping me company. It really is like carrying around a little friend for a few months, a secret friend, a friend who hides out when anyone else comes near. He’s kind of like an imaginary friend who makes me nauseous.

LOVE your “mutha” shirt! 😉

LOVE your “mutha” T-shirt. And I completely know what you mean about the baby not moving when the husband is there to feel it. Mine did that all the time.

The texting picture…is really cute!
All my babies used to play possum when Daddy tried to get in on the action. I think it’s their way of building a special Mommy/baby bond. I could usually fool them into action by spooning up against Daddy’s back. (Maybe it’s something about the feeling of the hand that stilled them?)

I’m nearly at the 28 week mark and my son does the same thing to my husband. My husband has managed to “trick” him on occasion, but for the most part the party stops as soon as Daddy comes near.
It does feel a bit like a secret buddy. I’m getting to know him sooooo much sooner than the rest of the world. I’m lovin’ it.

You look terrific. I love that black shirt!

You look absolutely beautiful! There is nothing more beautiful than an expectant Mommy. I always loved being pregnant….even through the barfing too!

My babies did that too. How do they know? And you look so cute!

This makes me laugh and laugh and laugh. My imaginary friend wants to play with your imaginary friend. Is he/she busy?

I think the one part of pregnancy that I actually enjoyed is the part you’re in now. Big enough to feel the baby move and feeling a little better, but not huge and uncomfortable yet.
You look lovely in your belly. 🙂

Ow Ow! check out the hottness (that’s right, you get 2 t’s) that is you! I bought the John Hodgeman book. the section on the History of Lobsters in America is hilarious. (that’s the only part I’ve read so far.)

Oh I remember those days. And then my hubby would stnad there patiently waiting. Nothing.
And oh yes, those little people in there make the sickness worth it. But BOY was that sickness miserable!
Lynette says
My second one was very active in utero (turns out that was a good indication of his personality post-utero) and the only thing that calmed him down was having my husband talk to him or touch my belly.
I agree with everyone else that you look terrific! And if in fact you are having a boy, I’d like to give a special congrats to Laylee, from someone who is the oldest with two younger brothers. I wouldn’t trade them for anything and I’m close to both of them to this day.

Kathryn, I just sent you an email inviting you to our mom blogging event in Seattle. Just wanted to let you know in case it gets lost to spam. 🙂

Ooo! I remember that. I loved having a buddy with me all day. The first time I went anywhere without him (to the grocery store about a week after he was born), I cried in the car. Walking around the store with my still pregnant-looking belly and knowing he wasn’t in there anymore was a strange and scary feeling.

Exceptional writing as always!
Love the photos! You’re so cute!!!! 🙂

I love little secret friends. I am 2 weeks into baby #4 being front and center and I think the secret kind is much more conducive to sleep and personal comfort in general, 🙂 but not as easy to cuddle. congrats on another miracle.
ps I am coveting your MUTHA shirt!

It’s the dancing frog syndrome: something that only happens when no one else is paying attention! (From that Looney Toons cartoon where the frog Porky is supposed to dissect jumps up in the box, dons a top hat and cane and starts singing “Hello My Baby.”) Happens with cars, computers, and now we can add babies to the list.

You are so stinkin’ cute!

I loved that feeling, too, of the little baby inside me keeping me company all the time, everywhere I went.
