Coming out of a movie theatre the other night Dan and I couldn’t help overhearing a conversation between 4 teenagers. One of them had lost his wallet and they were all trying to find it. He said he was desperate to retrieve it, if for nothing else, to keep hold of his military ID. His friend chimed in earnestly, “Yeah, and your library card.”
To that his friend said, “Oh. I don’t think I have a library card.”
“What?! You don’t have a library card?!!
You gotta have a library card!
You can use a library card for anything.
If you don’t have a library card, you *&!?%# SUCK!”
His friends just stood there, semi-dumbstruck by his rabidly loyal defense of one of our country’s most beloved public institutions. Maybe he changed their minds. Maybe one or all of them went out to get library cards the next day.
Whatever happened, I think his diatribe should be put on a poster in an elementary school somewhere with a smiling portrait of Raven-Symoné, holding a copy of Stuart Little.

Peer pressure can sometimes be good. I would panic if I lost my military id. It has my husband and my SSN on it much to my annoyance. I feel like I am carrying around a ticking time bomb but have to keep it with me.
Allison says
Library cards are the bomb!
Carrie says
I think I’d have to agree with that one!
ps – I FINALLY saw Twilight last week and wow – thatsa a lotta teenagers for one movie…I so wish I could have just rented the place and seen it alone. But still, good flick.
Sue says
PRICELESS.
Antique Mommy says
That cracks me up. But it’s true. 4 out of 5 library card holders suck less than the average non-library card holding population.
Keyona says
Library cards do rock, especially the ones you can put on your keychain! :o)
jennifer says
Whew….I am so relieved I have a library card…and that my teenagers all have one too 🙂
Carrie says
I’m the daughter of a librarian, so I have to agree!
Lady of Perpetual Chaos says
That’s fabulous! Definitely poster worthy. I’ll have to remember that quote to share with my children as they get older! ;o)
ZaCarrie says
I would totally put a poster like that in my classroom. I think my students would relate with the language. Unfortunately they’re only 6.
The Daring One says
I say keep it edgy, hold their attention, you catch my meaning?
aimee says
Oh his mom would be so proud! (Except for the swears, of course!)
Tiffany Wylie says
Warms this librarian’s heart right through. Thanks for sharing.
Should I put it on the wall in my library–mine the swearing :-)?
Heffalump says
Now I have that Arthur song stuck in my head.
“Having fun, isn’t hard
When you’ve got a Library Card!”
Our library is small, and I just have to tell the librarian my # when I check something out. I also volunteer there occasionally and get to be the Librarian.
Paige says
That’s true, they suck less, but they pay more fines.
Shalee says
Seriously laughed out loud and then nodded in full agreement with that kid’s stand.
I know my card number by heart, and though I have fines a time or twenty, I love knowing that I have all these adventures at my fingertips. Totally worth the 10 cents a day late fee.
