PopStar Guitar Review and Giveaway

December 14, 2008 by Kathryn

***The winner is commenter number #56, Diane.***

Are any of you out there closet gamers? I’ve spent my whole life sort of mocking gamers, gently mocking because I know and love many of them, but mocking nonetheless. Now I’ve had the Wii for a year and I am totally nerd-a-liciously in love with it.

popstarBut it’s an expensive little guy to feed and clothe. That’s why I’m excited to offer you all the chance to win a new Wii game just in time for Christmas. It’s called PopStar Guitar and has a concept similar to Guitar Hero.

I’m a huge Guitar Hero fan so I was excited to try this game out and pass it on to one of you. Here’s the rundown. There are several things I like about it. First, the price is right. It costs about the same as a regular Wii game but comes with two controllers, ready to play right out of the box.

Second, it has TWO controllers. I love the fact that you can play against with someone else right away, no more gear to buy.

Third, you are much more likely on PopStar Guitar to find female characters who are not dressed like ladies of the night. Seriously I do not want Laylee to even see the screen with what the GH girls are wearing.

Some other notes about the game: The songs are lighter than those on Guitar Hero, making it more appropriate for pop fans or younger audiences but they also have less interesting guitar solos. The controls aren’t exactly like butta. I much prefer the feel of an “actual” guitar in my hand. It helps me rock out more and get my groove on and such because that’s what we thirty-year-olds are wont to do. The little PopStar Guitar controllers aren’t as much fun. But then they’re half the price…

I’m also not a huge fan of the fact that they use some cover versions of songs instead of sticking exclusively to original music but I’d be much more likely to let Laylee play PopStar Guitar than the other similar games out there.

If you’d like a free copy, leave a comment on this post with the name of your favorite Wii game and I’ll draw a winner on Wednesday night.

You have to pick me . . . you just have to!

Anyway, since we are having a Merr-Wii little Christmas this year, I don’t have a favorite Wii game yet, but I’m looking forward to my Shaun White Snowboarding game . . . does that count?!

Me, pick me! My girls would love to rock out and I am a little tired of the skimpy outfits on RockBand and Guitar Hero! I think my favorite game would have to be Wii Fit – now if only I actually used it everyday…

    Wow-wii!
Well my family has only ever played one game… Rock Band. And may I say we loved it! Even my 6 yr old was drumming pretty well I thought… If everything turns out as planned… and my kids are all nice ’till Christmas… I am hopeful that St Nick will bring a wii our way! And thus would just love it if we are chosen!

I am a big fan of Wario Ware. It is a fun starter game to get people used to the Wii, plus it is so weird the guests always crack up. Nose picking! Genuis!

I like the bowling game best, followed by cooking mama. Drew would love this game…he has a hard time keeping up with some of the other ‘guitar’games

Well, I’m getting a Wii for Christmas, but I’ve played my friends and families Wii’s. I’d say my fav-o game is the cow racing game on Wii Play. Its short but so much fun!

Mario Kart is the greateat. Where else can you drive like a maniac along with a seven year old? He would totally love this game.

We like bowling and tennis the best at our house. I think I’m ready to branch out, though!

Sadly, so far my favorite game is probably bowling, because we have yet to get ANY additional games for the Wii.

We rented Raving Rabbids, though, and that was tons of fun. 🙂

We just got a Wii about a month ago… My poor husband had to wait a whole year. It was very hard on him, but he lived through it and I hope it built some character 🙂 Right now my favorite game is Mario Kart because it is so entertaining to watch my three year old son play it! He lives just to drive over the sweet jumps. If he misses one he has to turn around and “try again”. Gotta hit them all!

I love my Wii Fit, but Dancing with the Stars is another fun one, and my DH loves Excite Truck 🙂

Have you tried Wii Music for the kids? It’s a much more dumbed down version of GH and less “rockstar” too.

BTW, my favorite game for the Wii is still Wii Sports. Very simplistic in nature, but a great game for everybody when family and friends are over.

Mario Kart Wii is the best so far.

Well, I don’t have a favorite Wii game. But my son does! And it’s probably the one he got for his birthday last week–Mario Party 8. But this one sounds like fun, and like I’d enjoy it and play with him–which would make his little life complete!

My favorite Wii game… that’s tough!

I’d say it’s almost an even split between Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart. I’m not a big fan of violent games – I’m not attracted to them, and then if I finally do sit down to play I get stressed out really fast and end up feeling upset and on edge.

Mario Galaxy is the perfect adventure game and it utilizes the Wiimotes in a really cool way. You leap from planets to space ships, collecting crystals and saving cute little puffy stars. And, although it’s not necessary, you can play with two cooperating players – one to collect and “shoot” the stars (no guns – more like aiming a colored shooting star at spiders and such), and the other to actually control Mario’s movements. The game has it’s stressful moments, but it’s great fun.

I’m probably a little bit more of a fan of Mario Kart than Mario Galaxy though. You can play Mario Kart with up to 4 people. It’s a racing game, (you still can shoot shells, etc.) and I don’t consider it violent. And you’re rewarded for progress with additional cars and characters. Also, you can hook it up to the internet and play with people all over the world which I think is pretty much the coolest thing since sliced bread! I love racing people from Spain and New Zealand and Japan all at once!

I’m interested in this pop star guitar game because my husband and I love to play the wii together, but we’ve been in a bit of a wii funk lately. We can’t keep purchasing new games for our consumption – especially in hard times, budgets exist for a reason. But we’ve sort of played our couple of games to death over the last year. Both of us love (and play) music. This sounds like a great game for us to try.

I agree with you about the depiction women and the music in GH. My brother owns it, and every time I’ve tried it it’s been SUPER fun – but I’ve wished for better music.

    Good luck to everyone!

This looks so fun! My favorite Wii game is actually on the “Wii Play” disc they give you in the Wii bundle set – it’s the game where you race cows. Oh my goodness, have you played that?? It’s make me laugh SO HARD every single time we play. It’s hilarious – you race cows and make them jump hurdles and mow down scarecrows, and you can even push your opponent (and their cow!) off track. Seriously, it’s my favorite!

I LOVE playing air guitar with my kids, so this would make perfect sense.
Bowling… I can’t believe it really is, but it’s hilarious and fun. Have you ever played Wii bowling… ie: “air bowling” with someone who is very serious about it? They look like they are doing the “silly walk” and boy, do they hate to be mocked.

    count me in!

Gosh, it’s my kids that love the Wii so much. Currently, the game of choice is Mario Super Galaxy. I personally like to bowl. I know–boring! Trust me, we would put this game to great use around here.

We are getting a Wii for xmas (I think!), and though I have yet to play a single game on it, I think it’s safe to say that my now-and-forever favorite Wii game is/will be The Legend of Zelda – Twilight Princess. I have loved each and every Zelda game I have ever played, from the original back in the mid-80’s up to The Phantom Hourglass for DS.

I really enjoy our Wii fit… Joseph kicks my tooshie at about everything, but it sure is fun! We’d love this game… and I think I’d get rid of the “ladies of the night” version. DH enjoys the songs, but the graphics leave something to be desired.

My husband is the video-gamer in our family, but I do like, actually, LOVE Mario Party. Most of our video games are games he plays, but we bought the Mario Party for the Wii. Now, if only I could teach my 10-month-old to play with me. It’s boring by yourself.

We also have a Wii Fit, but it’s been untouched for awhile. Something we should remedy since it was so much. But it’s not as much fun as Mario Party.

My children and I are enjoying the My Sims game together. Really, they are so adorable I can’t stand it (the kids and the characters)! I have no Guitar Hero because of the price, but I totally enjoyed it at a friends house and would love a more kid friendly family version.

We’ve only had a Wii for a couple months and the only games we have for it are the Wii sports. So far, I like tennis and despise boxing and my husband totally beats me at everything we play. So frustrating. Maybe I could hold my own with this Pop Star thing.

Oooooh! I saw this in the store last week and thought it looked like fun! Would love to try it! I’ve become fairly addicted to Wii since we gave it to my son last year for his birthday. Though his fave game is Lego Star Wars, mine is definitely American Idol–totally fun and hillarious.

Thanks for offering this! Can’t wait to see who wins!

Ok, My favorite wii game was American Idol, until I was THE American Idol like 80 times too many and my husband got completely tired of listening to me sing Midnight Train to Georgia. Anywho, second favorite that I got addicted to was some cooking game. I can’t remember the name of it, but I am pretty sure that I was a little too old for it 🙂

I’m not sure I have found “the one” favorite. I like Guitar Hero, Mario Kart and Mario Galaxy. I really stink at DDR. I think I’m still holding out for the old Super Mario Bros. OHHHHH WAIT! I did LOVE paper Mario. Mostly because it was something I could figure out on my own that my hubby couldn’t come in and finish for me (a bad habit of his…very frustrating!)

  48. Andrea says

I can’t give you the name of my favorite wii game yet, because the one I just bought off of craigslist is hiding in my garage until Christmas morning! So I really, really, really, really, want to win a cool new game to go with it!

  51. ZaCarrie says

    December 15, 2008 at 9:24 pm

  52. bec says

    December 15, 2008 at 11:42 pm

ZaCarrie — you can totally get Dr. Mario via the wii shop channel as a wiiware download game for like 10ish bucks. And it is a blast. One of the game modes allows you to grab the “extra” half of a pill once you get rid of a row/column and *place it elsewhere*. Plus you can play with your friend instead of competing in that mode, which is nice. Of course the normal modes are all there too.

That said, World of Goo is my favorite (another wiiware download). Though Wario Ware is a close second…silly times abound.

  53. Lori O. says

    December 16, 2008 at 6:18 am

This would be the best Christmas present ever!

My favorite Wii game is the matching game on the WiiPlay… I like other games too, but I always come back to that one trying to beat my score and I love that they put the Miis that we created in it.

  54. Stephanie says

    December 16, 2008 at 9:27 am

I like the bowling. It’s almost like being in a real alley – you cheer for other people and make small talk in between people’s turns. I like the interaction that the Wii gives – there’s no other console that does that.
