Hunks of Chicken at a Stoplight

November 13, 2007 by Kathryn

It was THAT kind of day, the kind of day when dinner rolls around and you’re returning dishes to Linens and Things, dishes you bought earlier THAT day, while your Costco rotisserie chicken gets cold on the front seat of your van.

On the bright side, it’s a good thing the chicken’s cold because when the kids start begging for food, you can tear off chunks with your bare hands and toss them into their little mouths without burning them.

And now I can’t sleep but I can’t think clearly either. I can think clearly enough that the list of things I didn’t accomplish today and likely won’t accomplish tomorrow play over and over in my head in vivid detail, but not clearly enough to actually do any of them.

My kids ate raw spinach leaves and Costco chicken shards in the car for dinner because apparently we are on the mobile Atkins diet. For breakfast tomorrow I think I’ll load them onto a ferry somewhere in the Puget Sound and throw sausage, eggs and chicken livers at their heads.

Mmmm. Spinach and chicken in the car! Sounds great.

I had lists running through my head last night, too. But this morning can I remember it all clearly? Not so much.

You are crazy. You forgot to mention all the kids you watched for three hours. 🙂

Ha Ha Ha! I’ve had days like that. Today will be better. Let’s face it, it probably can’t get any worse.

Oh man. That is SO the day I’ve been having. For, like, a week now.

And chocolate milk! Don’t forget that on the ferry, says Kid.

We know just the ferry you should ride on! 🙂

The Mobile Atkins Diet? Right now we’re on the Stationary Candy Diet, which is not QUITE working for us.

Well, at least you didn’t have to feed them like a bird mommy … so you’ve got that going for you 🙂

Ummm…I want to come on the ferry. It’s going to be freezing but that’s alright.

I completely relate to the thinking clearly paragraph. I live that. It’s so hard to get clear! The only way I’ve found is to sit down and really play with the kids. No “teaching moments” just playing. Of course, that wastes time that you could be doing something, but I like to think of it as the thing that gets me out of the mud I’ve been stuck in. Afterwards my tires aren’t spinning so pointlessly.

(Heehee. Spell check caught that I typed “tireds” instead of “tires” — someone’s sleepy!)

    ROFL! Feel sistah.

    Two things:

    1. LOVE the Costco chicken. Any other chicken is for the birds.
    2. Am sooooo impressed that your kids will eat raw spinach leaves.

You know, that is one of the many wonderful things about kids – they are perfectly happy with chunks of flying cold chicken, you know, because they are the same people who will eat Goldfish off the grocery store floor.

Seems to me that chicken and spinach leaves are pretty good for you. At some point, I bet that they had milk or yogurt or cheese and also bread. On days that get out of hand, especially, I think it’s important to focus on what went right. Spinach and chicken are definitely in the “worked” column.

Hey, they got their protein and some nutrients? You’re just keeping things interesting location wise. It’s all good.

I had one of those days recently. The only difference was Maddie ate bananas. All day long. 5 of them. And I didn’t even realize it until I wanted one myself.

Where do I sign up for the Stationary Candy Diet?? And do you have to be stationary AFTER eating, or just DURING?

Ditto! You just expressed how I felt today (but much more eloquently than I ever could) and it is nice to know that this is normal…or at least common 🙂 Thanks for the laugh–I loved the mobile atkins comment!

Hey, at least you got something healthy into them. If it were me I would be like “Hey, eat this half a peanut butter sandwich I just found under the seat. I don’t see anything growing on it so it’s probably ok!”
