When I Grow Up

March 14, 2010 by Kathryn

Magoo told me the other day that he wants to be a paleontologist when he grows up. Then he self-corrected and told me that no, he just wants to be a “regular dad” who stays home. He wants to be a “regular dad” the same way I’m a “regular mom.”

He also said he doesn’t want to be a grandpa either because grandpas have to move REALLY far away from home, so far that they have to drive all day and all night to get home. And also they die sometimes and he doesn’t want to die ever.

I guess Laylee’s not the only one thinking about grandparental death. I’m not afraid of it. My parents and Dan’s parents are not allowed to die. I am also swearing off death. I still need plenty of time to decide what I want to be when I grow up.

I’m thinking about becoming a professional student. Maybe I’ll be a high school or college teacher. I’ll definitely be writing for a living. Perhaps I’ll get a black belt in karate. What do you want to be when you grow up?

I think I might want to be a teacher, or an astronaut, or a singer with an amazing voice that would take me around the world doing sold-out concerts. Actually, I would just love to find a job where I could make the same amount of money but only work part time so I can spend more time with my family. Is that lame? =)

Completely unlame. Sounds just about right to me.

When I grow up (if that ever happens) I want to be BETTER. That’s all just better – in so many ways than I am so far.

I want to be a world traveler. Does that count?

      Absolutely!

One of the first rules of our marriage is that death is not allowed. “No dying – it’s against the rules” gets said a lot in our house. It applies equally to pretty much everyone in my household.

I hope this isn’t because people keep showing signs of breaking the rule…

Ha! Not so much (thankfully!). But if, for instance, hubby’s driving in the snow, he gets reminded of the rules. Or if one of the kids is doing something similarly dangerous.

I asked my pre-school co-op kids the same question. What do you want to be when you grow up? One said a Unicorn, another a kitty and a dragon. So along those lines. I want to be a Fairy Godmother when I grow up and wear beautiful vintage dresses covered with glitter. I’ve wave a magic wand and everything will be perfectly clean and everyone who meets me will be happy. Or in other words – I don’t ever want to grow-up.

I just want to spend all my time with my husband when I grow up and go around visiting my grown up kids and grandkids.

I’d also like to go on a mission, and maybe write some children’s books.

When I grow up, I want to be alone. For just ten minutes. Without locking myself in the bathroom.

And after that I want to be a nurse, maybe in L&D so I can see all those new babies. Or a fairy with vintage sparkly dresses and a magic wand – I like that idea!

Ha, I used to ask people, “What do you want to be when you grow up, IF you grow up” because if we were truly honest with ourselves, some people do not grow up. When I grow up, I want to live in a cottage in the woods, work in a little garden and ignore the rest of the world. Of course, I hope my husband is with me, but I do hope he grows up with me and learns to talk.

Hmm I’m thinking about ice cream flavor supervisor 🙂
